How to Kill Your Adwords Quality Score in Two Easy Steps

Many AdWords users are killing their quality score and they don?t even know it. The quality score, among other things, is used by Google to determine ad placement and cost. There are quite a few advertisers who are absolutely killing their score and they don?t even realize it.

The formula that Google uses to determine quality score may take many factors into account but there are two things that will kill your score in a heartbeat. A lower quality score means that you are going to pay more for your AdWords placement.

1.) Landing Page

In the eyes of Google the landing page must be true to the letter of your ad. If you promise a free report or e-book, then your landing page must have an open link to the download. No squeezing allowed.

Honestly, Google and AdWords are not against the use of Squeeze Pages; however they are against advertising something for free and then requiring your visitor to exchange their name and email address for your product. As Google sees it, free means free, not in exchange for something.

The best way to get around this is to NEVER use the word ?free? in you AdWords copy if there is not an open download link on the landing page. If you insist on doing this, Google will penalize you.

A few words of advice on Landing Pages.

Keep your landing page relevant to your AdWords copy. Google loves sites that have relevant, high quality copy. Sites that are not relevant to their ad copy are considered low quality and while Google will not ban them they will raise their costs so high that using AdWords is no longer economically feasible.

Avoid redirects on your landing page. The the use of sneaky redirects seems to be a part of the underside of the internet marketing business and is a ?black hat? technique we all pay for. Google hates redirects used on landing pages and in the future these pages my not be indexed or may even be de-indexed.

Do not use hidden text or links. If Google observes your site to have hidden text or links and deems them deceptive in nature, you may find that your site has been removed from the Google Index.

2.) Floating Layer and Hover Ads

Google and AdWords hate these things. Simply put, these types of ads will destroy your quality score. Get them off your landing page as soon as possible. Replace these ads with a static opt-in form built into your landing page.

3.) Pop Up or Pop Under Ads

Google sees these types of ads as a hindrance to navigation on a site and will ban your landing page from AdWords if you use them. They will only re- activate your AdWords ads when you have removed any type of pop up or pop under ads.

If you are using any of the points outlined here on your site then you are only hurting yourself. Clean up your site and you will find that your ad position may climb while you costs may drop!

When we consult with businesses on their Adwords campaigns, we always include a critique of their landing page/website, because we can send the best targeted traffic to a poor website and the results will still be poor.

Several issues to bear in mind when looking at your website/landing page:

Does your site offer something that your target market actually needs or wants? Have you researched your market? Have you made sales already from your site? If not, you should put yourself in your customers shoes and really critique your offering. Does your site/landing page relate to the keywords/ads that sent the visitor to the page otherwise the visitor will hit the back button result, wasted click! Does it include a headline? You have a fraction of a second to capture the visitors attention the headline needs to hit visitors hot buttons, be relevant and related to the search they performed. Is the site well designed, look professional and easy to navigate? Otherwise, that back button will be used again! Does the site include useful, relevant information that helps the visitor make a decision about the product or service you are offering? Are there multiple ways for the visitor to interact with you? Do you just offer a phone number and email? Are you collecting leads if the prospects dont purchase right away? If you are not offering multiple methods for a prospect to interact with you, you have no idea whether your site is of interest and no method of performing follow-up marketing. Are conversions set up with your website to capture statistics in Adwords relating to sales and leads? If not, you are flying blind with your campaigns you receive leads/sales but you have no idea which ads/keywords generated the action.

Get your website right before you spend a ton of cash sending traffic to it otherwise you will have nothing to show for the work you have put into your finely tuned Adwords campaign.

How You Can Get an Eight Out of Ten Quality Score

I recently launched a new website and Adwords campaign.  My ad groups, keywords and Landing Pages have an 8 out of 10 quality score.  This is a brand new website and a brand new campaign.  Adwords calls this a “great” Quality Score. I’ll describe the exact steps I took so you can duplicate them and get great quality scores as well.

First, the market is highly competitive.  It’s a market that all major news outlets said was hot and growing online in December 2008 despite the recession.  I have over 500 keywords.  I’ll talk more about them in a minute, but I want to give you an idea of the scale of the campaign.

I started with the landing pages.  I have unique, tailored Landing Page for each keyword.  The whole key to a great quality score is having relevant ads and landing pages for your keywords.  I recommend a strategy of having only one keyword per ad group.  The entire strategy is freely available at adwords-marketing-tool.com.  The strategy guide covers in detail all the concepts I’m about to summarize for creating a landing page.  Get your free strategy guide at adwords-marketing-tool.com.

I’ll briefly describe the steps to build a tailored landing page.  You start with domain relevant to your market.  Plus your domain should only be about your market.  You don’t want a domain, or a subdomain that covers many topics.  Keep your domain targeted.  Next, each page has the keyword as the landing page.  For example, if the keyword is “college football”, the page is named college-football.php.  That puts the keyword in the url.

For each page, I have the keyword in the title tags, keywords meta tag, and description meta tag.  I also have the keyword in the heading (h1) tags on the page.  There is content tailored for the keyword on the landing page.

I have just said I have over 500 tailored landing pages.  I did not write each by hand.  Instead, I used the advanced strategy guide and the techniques described inside to automate this task.  I spent about 25 hours over 5 days during Christmas to launch this website.  It would have taken me weeks to create landing pages manually.  Visit adwords-marketing-tool.com to get the advanced strategy guide and learn how you can automate website and campaign creation.

The last thing I did for each landing page was add a link to my sitemap, contact us and privacy policy pages.  Google wants your website to look like more than a single page.  It also wants you to be transparent and offer contact info and policies.

The next step was to tackle the keywords.  I had about 20 high traffic keywords.  These were not long tailed keywords.  They were the top volume producers for the market.  I wanted to append U.S. cities to the front of each keyword.  This would turn high volume keywords into long tails, and simultaneously target geographic areas.  This was the best way to attack this highly competitive market.

I used the free Adwords Bracket Tool at adwords-marketing-tool.com to generate my keywords.  The free tool lets you combine a list of prefixes (or suffixes) to your keywords.  I used the tool to append cities to front of my keywords.  Imagine turning keyword x into “New York x, Los Angeles x, and Chicago x” automatically.

Finally, I need to create the Adwords campaign.  Again, I used the campaign creator tool at adwords-marketing-tool.com.  This generated the entire campaign in seconds, keywords, landing pages, ads and all.

That’s it.  That’s how I generated a new campaign for a new website and got 8 out of 10 quality scores.

I still have some work to do.  First, the market is so competitive, the expense is climbing rapidly.  The good news is I have CTRs anywhere from 5% to 20%.  I’m bidding a high CPC to get that high CTR for the first few weeks.  Over the long haul, I will be able to lower the CPC and still have top placement due to the outstanding CTRs.  Plus, I have is 8 out of 10 for 90% of the keywords, the others are 7.  I do not have any 9 or 10 scores.  I’m still chasing those.

How To Market A Product By Setting Up An Effective Signature File In Forums

Forums are one of the most effective ways of generating free targeted traffic and marketing your product.. In this article I will guide you through effective signature file setup that will drive an arsenal of traffic to your offer for life. This is a step by step guide and there is no time to waste.

A signature file in forums is a paragraph that says something about you or your offer. This paragraph appears below any post that you make in the forum. This only place you can sell yourself or your product in the forums, therefore the more effective it is the more the leads you generate. More leads means more sales and more cash.

If you market an affiliate product, you can just copy the headline from the sales letter and include a link to the sale letter. For example, if I wanted to promote a product like “Acme People Search Affiliate Program” I would copy the headline of the sales letter, and then paste it as my signature file. I would include a call to action like “discover how you can earn from 8 income streams rolled in one program.”

Or I would hyperlink the name of the product and then include the headline of the sales letter. If the product is yours, use the name of the product hyperlinked as I just explained, this is a good way to “brand” your product.

For example “Acme People Search Affiliate Program – 8 income Streams rolled in one program”

If you are an affiliate of the said product, you can use a “blind” promotion and not mention the name of the product. Let curiosity get the best of people and then click on your link. Or, you can create a short, sweet and controversial description of the product you promote. For Example, The REAL Secret To Making Money Online! : The Easiest Way To Make Money From ‘Scams’ Told.

Another thing you can do is set up a landing page and offer a positive review of the product you market as well as an added bonus for people who purchase through your affiliate link. This I tell you can work extremely well, especially if you have used the product yourself and have gotten great results.

For example if you joined the Learn How To Earn Forum and you learnt skills that enabled you sign up 20-50 leads per day you could create a signature file that says something simple like:

“Come see how I got 30 signups yesterday without ‘calling’ anyone.”

Then you would hyperlink that to your landing page that could say something like:

“I had tried everything and I couldn’t generate leads for my Internet business, but then I discovered magnetic sponsoring at the Learn How To Earn Forum and I started to generate 30 – 60 leads every single day on complete autopilot in just 10 days.”

I obviously used a short version of what you could say here – but I think you get the point.

Something that can work very well is to make a special offer for members of each individual forum. For example if you post in a forum called “MLM Tactics Board” you can say something like:

Special offer for members of MLM Tactics Board :( That’s it) point that to a landing page that restates the fact that this offer is for members of the MLM Tactics Board.

Another thing you can do is have several links to several different products separated by a “pipe”

There’s no “law” that prohibits you from linking to more than one resource. For example you can have a signature file that looks something like:

You can have each link point to different landing pages. You can use your desired “anchor” text in your signature file. So if you do keyword research and you see that some specific keywords get many searches (and you can provide a solution or a product to point peoples who search for them to) you can use these keywords to link to your landing page.

The popular forums in your industry are considered huge authority sites and they have a lot of ‘weight’ in the search engines. If you don’t believe me, search for 10 random terms. You’ll see that many times. Some of the top results are nothing more than forum threads.

Having these sites link to your page is a great “side effect” of you using a well thought out signature file. Many links from different authority sites can make your landing pages rank high on the search engines.

Note that you can modify your signature file at anytime. You can promote a different product, add another product, stop promoting a specific product etc

If you want to track how effective your signature files are, you can use a tracking link instead of pointing directly to your landing page. Yes forum marketing is free but you will still put time into it. You need to know if it pays enough for your time.(and if you do exactly what I tell you should get paid more than fairly)

If you want to take advantage of the links in your signature file with a specific anchor text, in order to build link popularity for your site, and then don’t use 3rd party tracking service. Use a tracking link that will be on the same domain as your page and just add a variable at the end of the link. For example if your landing page is:

Yoursite.com/leadgenerationtactics.html

Then you could use a tracking link like:

Yoursite.com/leadgenerationtactics.php?source=forum name and that page would then redirect to yoursite.com/leadgenerationtactics.html

The, just by checking your server logs, you would determine the performance of your signature file.

Arranging elements on a web page effectively means placing the most important points to your message high up on the page in a brief, scannable format.  Plan your layout carefully and use headings, sub headings, and paragraphs to break up lengthy text.

Build trust with visitors every chance you get by placing trust icons such as privacy certifications, business certifications, testimonials from clients, and more near the call to action where a visitor is most likely to hesitate and turn back.

Reduce click-away distractions to keep the visitor focused only on the conversion.  Popups, banner ads, and even your navigation menu can all give them an opportunity to go elsewhere on your website where the chances they’ll convert fall to almost zero.

Minimize the number of steps to complete the desired action or conversion by placing response forms and phone numbers directly on the landing page.  Ideally, you would place this as high up on the page as possible as the majority of visitors, no matter how engaging the content will never scroll past the first screen.

Finally, have a very clear call to action and if possible, indicate the benefit for completing the action as well.  “Download 14-Day Free Trial Now” or “Start Using SystemX Today” Avoid vague calls to action like “Go” or ”Submit”

With the NHL having it’s week of all things 99 an article was written about him being shipped to the sun soaked coast of California and I was wondering how important to the game and the Oilers do you think the trade to be? In the article it was compared to the Sox-Yanks swap of the Great Bambino but that trade had the interesting fact that for 86 years the BoSox couldn’t ever win, while the Yanks went headlong into glory. 99 brought better exposure to the game in non-traditional markets but he never captured another Cup, while Messier, even with the “Great One”, captained the Oilers to another sip out of Lord Stanley’s Mug. Personally, I’ve always felt the trade was good for the marketing of the league but never meant as much in terms of production for either side, where the Sox-Yanks Ruth trade created so much more frustration/happiness for either side.

Why are auto companies reluctant to offer “clean diesel” vehicles in the US?

I read this this morning and was absolutely appalled.

Ford, an American auto company who has been taking an absolute beating from companies like Toyota and Honda in the fuel efficient vehicle market, has a nice looking 5 passenger car that gets 65 mpg. However, they are not planning to sell it in the US. The reason:

“”We know it’s an awesome vehicle,” says Ford America President Mark Fields. “But there are business reasons why we can’t sell it in the U.S.” The main one: The Fiesta ECOnetic runs on diesel.”

WTF?!?!?!

Am I the only one who finds this statement to be completely absurd? We have the technology *today* to produce diesel fuel *directly* from algae in a very clean space efficient system. There is no refinement other than squeezing the oil out of the little buggers. No drilling, no big ugly tankers.

So… what’s the problem?!?!?

Consumers generally turn their noses up at them, perceiving issues with performance, noise, pollution and maintenance. All of these issues have apparently been resolved. Also, all the buzz is with electric hybrids, which is where consumers heads are now if they are looking for high mileage/low pollution. So Ford thinks it would be too much of a risk. But I think that the brownie points that they would earn would alone make it worthwhile. And they could catch on since there isn’t the hybrid premium.

4. Use call to action phrases. It’s a proven fact that people respond better when actually asked (or told) to do something specific. It makes sense when you think about it, and a simple “fill out your name and email address to the left/right” is all it takes. This should be obvious to more experienced marketers, but you’d be amazed at how many people miss this.

5. Tell them what’s coming. Make sure you let the reader know what will happen next and exactly when it will happen. This will improve the opt-in rate and reduce distraction on the other side of the opt in after taking action.

6. Use a serious disclaimer. Show the visitor that you’re not interested in spamming and where possible, try to re-enforce this by referring to your auto responder policies which will do everything they can to stop spamming occurring within their network of customers.

Processor upgrade on Intel 915 board, raid HD’s or graphics card?


I am trying to squeeze out some more performance out of system before I retire her and get a new one. I currently have an Intel® Desktop Board D915PBL with an Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor 630. I have a single generic hard drive and a GeForce 7950 GT for graphics. I am running with 2G of RAM.

I am looking at the following upgrade options:

Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor 670
Running 2 HD’s in RAID
Upgrading to a GeForce 8800GTX
Living with it for another year or so

Any ideas?

I’d go for a processor/motherboard upgrade (if you can find one that takes your existing RAM) I think socket 939 would do the trick…

Even an inexpensive Athlon 64 X2 like the 4000+ will smoke both the Pentium 4 630 and 670, given the same GPU. Your GeForce 7950 can certainly deliver more fps paired with a processor that can keep up with it.

An even faster CPU like a 4800+ or Core 2 Duo E6400 would be even better, but going C2D would almost certainly mean replacing your RAM.

If you were already on X2 or Core 2 Duo, then I’d say grab the 8800GTX, which is the most dramatic single upgrade. But I think you’re currently CPU-bound, so you might not see great improvement

For the price of an 8800GTX, you could possibly upgrade both CPU/mobo, and step up to something in the middle, like a Radeon X1950XT or GeForce 8800GTS 320mb.

However, you?re using it, a landing page is a web page, typically hidden from the site?s menu bar and other navigation ? meaning the only way you can get to the page is to type the URL directly into the browser. The web page is directly related to the ad campaign that listed the URL. Since only the people who have seen the ad will land on this page (because the URL isn?t advertised any where else), you as the website owner know exactly what the visitor is looking for and you can provide it to him immediately. For that reason, this type of web page is also referred to as a Dedicated Landing Page because it is dedicated only to the ad that brought in the visitors. Landing pages are critical to your success on line; in fact, they are often the ?makers or breakers? of your ROMD (return on marketing dollar). If you?re just getting your feet wet in the use of dedicated landing pages, I suggest starting small. Google AdWords is a great way to start small since you can easily limit your budget. Here are a few other tips to follow when creating your dedicated landing pages: ** Use a Consistent Message Many small business owners believe they need to have one message in the ad and another message on the landing page. Your landing page is just ONE component of your overall marketing strategy so build it and allow it to focus on just that ONE thing.

The landing page plays an integral part of any online business. Consider it front doorstep of your website. By assigning this page, or any others on your site for that matter, too many responsibilities, you will be decreasing its effectiveness. This will translate into any website traffic turning away before they ever even enter your site.

It really depends on who is visiting your site, but that average is pretty much accurate. In psychology, humans subconsciously know if they like you or not within 3 seconds of meeting you.

Your squeeze page templates will determine how long your visitors stay. Break that 8 second barrier with these tips.

The real estate of your squeeze page needs to be used so that you are placing things where the eye meets. Keep elements that you want the user to take action on immediately above the fold.

A squeeze page which is considered short does not go past the fold of the page.

Imagine the fold to be like a fold in a newspaper in case you don’t know what that means.

Short squeeze pages templates generally stay within the fold so that you don’t have to scroll down. More often short squeeze page templates are used, but on some occasions with B2B type relationships, long squeeze page templates are used.

Have your heading in your squeeze page tell the visitor clearly and directly what they get.

Again, with you squeeze page you only have about 9 seconds to make a first impression so it’s important to be direct. In the heading, tell the visitor the benefits and use the sub headline below it to support what you are stating.

With different colors for the headline and sub headline, you’ll make sure that each one of them stands out. But be careful in your squeeze page templates not to use too many colors that conflict.

With your squeeze page template, use bullets for each of your benefit for signing up.

By keeping white space or padding around your text, it makes it easier for your visitors to scan. Within 9 seconds, new visitors to your squeeze page will scan and then decide whether or not to see what you are offering.

In your bullets, list the best benefit on the first bullet point and the last best as the last bullet. Having a video that plays upon loading can also help with conversion rates. Collectively, all these improvements will help with your conversion rate on your squeeze page.

The action item that you want your visitor to do is give you their email address.

I would not use these, they do not follow the basic guidelines for effective squeeze pages.

Make your own squeeze page, the less graphics the better.

A squeeze page can be created in many diffferent ways but the most important element is not to over use graphics, if any at all.

A squeeze page has only one purpose, to get visitors to optin to your mailing list.

In order to achieve that the page has to be as clear as possible, without any distractions in the form of fancy graphics and or colors.

Put up a catchy header and subheader, then a little text to entice your visitors to signup.

Offer a free bonus and make it a limited time offer to create urgency.

Also important is to make sure you get all this information, including the signup form “above the fold”. People should not have to scroll down on a squeeze page. Put it all in eyes view.

Last but not least make sure you add a privacy and legal disclaimer to create trust.
