How can I make my website’s header look good on any screen?

How can I make it fit right without having to reformat the entire web page? I realize the whole table format is out of date, but I didn’t design the site, someone else did. I’m trying to make a simple change. The Header consists of 3 images. and on some computer screens, the center image gets dropped below the image on the right and looks like S H I T. okay, so what do I need to do to get all 3 images in one line, without squeezing the vertical margins together? here is the site. www.veneerexstone.com

Please do not post links on how to design a website correctly. If you know how to fix it, and make it presentable, please tell me how to do it. What Edits I can make in html code etc… I aprecitate the help.

What Makes an Effective Squeeze Page

Having an effective squeeze page can help you boost your online business as much as two hundred percent. Think about this. If you have an existing squeeze page that converts at just one percent, how much more business would you be doing if you can increase the conversion rates to two percent, three percent and more? It’s not uncommon to see Squeeze Pages converting at three to five percent. So why settle for less when you can have more? But first, let’s start by understanding the goal of a squeeze page before we dive into creating one.

The goal of the squeeze page is to capture the names and email addresses of the website visitors. This is the only reason why you need a squeeze page, so you should do everything in your power to make it work for you. Here are some important pointers to remember.

First, make sure that your opt-in form is always on the top half of your webpage. My recommendation has always been to have nothing but the opt-in form with a few bullet points on a single webpage. If you want the highest opt-in rate, then this is what you should be doing.

However, sometimes, it doesn’t appear appropriate to have nothing but a boring webpage with plain text on a website. For instance, if you have branding concerns, you may want to have more information on the webpage than just some plain texts.

In that case, just remember that the best location for your opt-in form is the top-fold area of your webpage. If possible, place it on the top right hand corner of the webpage. You can then place whatever necessary information beneath. This way, there’s very little chance that the website visitor can miss your opt-in form.

The second most important element that’ll affect the effectiveness of your squeeze page is having a compelling reason for website visitors to opt-in. Giving away something free has been the traditional advice, so I’m going to give you a piece of advice that’s a little bit different.

Give away something free, but make sure that whatever you’re giving away is unique, and extremely valuable to the subscriber. Don’t give away junk, and expect your visitors to sign-up for junk. They’ll unsubscribe anyway. Give away solid, exclusive information (your best information if you can) to your subscribers. Make it very hard for anyone to refuse your offer.

Remember, it doesn’t always have to be more, but whatever you’re giving away has to be useful to your website visitors. This achieve a few goals, which is beyond the scope of this article but from my own personal experience, these two simple (yet powerful) pointers have been very effective.

Build a Better Adwords Landing Page

In September of 2008, Adwords changed the Quality Score calculation to include the Landing Page Quality.  That means Adwords now considers the relevance of the Landing Page to the keyword when determining Quality Score of your ad.  Fortunately, it’s easy to build a better Landing Page.  Just follow these steps to improve your Quality Score.

1) Consider your Domain Name

The domain name of your website is important.  You want the domain name to be the keyword or to be in the general market for the keyword.  You can’t have a domain name for every single keyword, but try to get your main keywords in the domain name.  If you main keywords are in your domain, odds are your other keywords are related to it. 

Google Adwords considers the domain when assigning the quality score. Use hyphens in your domain name to separate individual words.  This will assist Google in evaluating your domain name.  For example, a good domain name for a website about Adwords Marketing would be adwords-marketing-tool.com.  The domain name contains the keywords adwords and marketing and they are hyphenated to make them readily apparent.

There is some debate to using hyphens in your domain name.  On one hand the hyphens make it easy for Adwords and Search Engines to distinguish the individual keywords.  On the other hand, human visitors tend to forget the hyphens and manually type Urls without them.  The solution is simple.  You should purchase both domains, with and without hyphens.  You should use the hyphenated domain in all your marketing materials.  But, you also have the domain without hyphens should a visitor type your domain without them.

Domain names are only a few dollars for an entire year.  There is no reason why you could not have both domains.  In addition, you should have unique domains for every market you are selling to.  Domain registration fees are very small when compared to your overall advertising budget.

2) The filename of the Landing Page

You can name your Landing Page file anything you want.  Why not make it the keywords the page is tailored for?  For example, if the keyword is “adwords marketing”, name your landing page file adwords-marketing.php.  This accomplishes two things.

First, Adwords will recognize the keywords in the destination url.  It’s another opportunity to get you keyword in the Adwords ad.  Every time you do, Adwords will boost the Quality Score.

Second, human visitors will also recognize keywords in the Landing Page Url.  It will help convince them that your landing is the page they are a looking for.

3) The title of the page should be the keyword

Each page has a title.  You can make your landing page title be the keyword. 

4) Use the keyword in the meta tags

Put meta tags on your landing page.  Make sure the keyword meta tags contains your keyword.  Plus, make sure the description tag also contains the keyword.

5) Add a heading tag with the keyword.

Google recognizes the heading “h1″ tags on your landing page.  Put these tags on your landing page, wrapped around your keyword.

6) Use the keyword in the content

Place the keyword in the content of the page.  You don’t want to over do it, but where applicable use your keywords in the content.

The following is an example of an HTML page targeted to the keywords “Adwords Marketing”.

Google’s Take on your Landing Page

With Google being one of the biggest online companies in the world, you will really have to stop and listen to what they have to tell you when it comes to your squeeze or landing pages. They have valuable nuggets of wisdom that can give you more savvy in your internet marketing business.

Google’s first tip for Squeeze Pages is to keep your objective in mind. You need to ask yourself the following questions: Are you for sale? Are you going for a lead? Or are you going for download? These are just three of the things that you can do with your Squeeze Page.

Another tip is for you to refer to specific keywords. Offers call to action on your landing pages. Free download sounds more appealing to people than any other flashing prose in their computer screens.

But when they get to your site with the hope of getting a free download and you require them to opt-in, it’s not free. We can debate that but probably a better way to go about that is to say, subscribe for free download or subscribe for download. This leads to the next tip which is make your ads as clear as possible.

Make you landing page navigation simple and help people get what they want. Don’t create obstacles and sure that people can get back to Google by clicking the back button and sure that you don’t have a popup or pop under on the landing page.

Now, Google’s definition of a popup or pop under is only when a new window opens. So the dynamic HTML fly-ins, slide-ins those are okay because the new window does not open. It is part of the existing webpage and you can use those to boost your sales.

For specfic Opt-in Pages, Google advocates that you keep your sign up simple as possible. Always go for the very minimum of what they could fill up. And after that you must also make sure that you give them something of equal or greater value for the information they give you.

In a nutshell, Google’s guidelines states that if your squeeze page is just squeezing them to a sales letter, you can get in trouble there. So you really must strive to offer a little bit of value of free downloads or free lessons.

Of course, notwithstsanding the fact that you are an internet marketer, those free five lessons can be disguised as informational sales letters. Subtlety is key to your success.

Clearly, there are just so many landing page approaches to choose from. You can go direct to merchant or earn via the Google cash method. You can send people to the review page where it basically reviews different products and compares them. You can do the pre-sell then squeeze. You can do the squeeze then pre-sell. You can also squeeze your way to merchant or download.

Whatever method you choose, just make sure you are not violating any rules and that you are really giving something of value as much as you are receiving valuable information. While you can get sales from deceptive means in making people opt-in, it is the element of trust that makes you get to keep your customers.

Health keeps coming up as some outrageously searched-for keyword. Helps that ‘Boomers are getting older (and Europe/Japan have worse problems than ours) and so they are all interested in extending their health and lives.

Search Google Trends for “health, life, nutrition, diet, fitness”. See what I mean? The things that would save their health and improve their lives (good food and exercise) are lower ranked than the goals themselves – which makes sense once you think about it. (But if you want to check for a sheep mentality, look up “life insurance” or “health insurance” – which are completely solutions for the after-the-fact-problem of losing your health or losing your life.) Health and Life are re-active scenes – the people who are proactive are more the minority.

But – searching various keyword programs for “life health” gives low response. Few people search for this combination.

So you wouldn’t use that combination as anything on your pages or link text. (I can think of some catchy book titles with these two, however…)

The test is if videos can replace articles. Now, I don’t have a great deal of video sites like YouTube. Frankly, like my tests in article marketing, it doesn’t much pay to submit to very many to get the key effects you want, which is people finding and buying your book.

Now, the recent research (and it worked for me, too) is that videos and social bookmarking, as well as blogging, get to the top of Google faster.

With TTS, and these short PLR articles, I could conceivably produce a video a day, based on the content of that ebook. You’d then become some sort of expert on health-related stuff. Sort of. Just like article marketing – on steroids.

Sequence is to create the ebook first – post to Lulu. (My clickbank is bugged, this would be preferable, since you could sell the book via affiliates and increase your sales.)

Take the text articles, add audio headers and footers – create the TTS audio (save in own directory).

Build your master mini-web, using your main keyword phrase you selected. This promotes the book. FTP that up and getting running.

Take time here and set up your Opt-in Page for that subject. Plug in some articles to your autoresponder sequence.

For each MP3 audio, make a video using clipart and stock photos. (Camtasia…)

Post the videos on YouTube and the MP3’s on Internet Archives.

As you post each video, create a new mini-web which links to the first one (and gives it all the pagerank). Each media file links to your Lulu product, but has individual keyword niches (where most of your geek time will be spent, other than making the videos.) Each mini-web also invites people to opt-in for more information on the subject.

Social bookmark each video and MP3 and mini-web index page as you post them.

Blog each video and link to the MP3 and mini-web. Social bookmark that blog-entry.

What you are doing is creating a buzz for each of these inter-related keyword niches. You rise to the top in each of these niches – which in turn give their pagerank over to your main mini-web, which promotes the book (as do all the sub-webs on your mini-net).

And all that should add up to a nice set of Google Page Rank which plops viewers to your main mini-net page and sells books. Plus it should give you a number of subscribers to your list, where you can interest them in other related products.

Just to add frosting to the cake, sign up with some affiliate programs which pay you per lead for insurance policies. Put these links prominently on your site and rake in some extra income.

It’s simply a test of video’s and article marketing

This is a test just to see if you can get faster response than the months it takes to get some volume out of article marketing. Certainly you wind up at the top of Google faster – but does it translate to sales? Sure, there are lots of factors present. And TTS is a cheesy way (perhaps) of making soundtracks for videos.

But it would be an interesting concept-test. Definately worth a test drive…

Remember that text links are easily read by search engines and load faster than graphic buttons. Optimize each image in editing software like Photoshop. There are different image formats like GIF, JPEG, PNG, TIFF etc., so try to save images in the appropriate format. GIF saved at 256 colors should be reduced (as much as possible) to 128, 64 or 32 colors without comprising image quality. To reduce website load time JPEGs should be saved in the lowest quality possible without spoiling picture impact. You can also use PNG if you are sure that your users are using newer browsers.
3. Specify Image Dimensions
While inserting images in HTML always mention height and width attributes. This helps the web browser to know the image size before loading it. The browser will then reserve the area for the images while rest of the web page design continues to load, thereby reducing website loading time. Do not use the height and width tags for image size reduction.
4. Pre-load Your Images
You can pre-load some heavy images of the next pages (that can be reached by clicking on links within the current page) by defining them at the footer of the current web page. For example, img src=”nextimage” height =”1″ width=”1″ inserts a 1×1 pixel image in the footer that is read by the browser when the code above it has been read. Thereafter, while your visitor is viewing your main page, images of the next page will continue to download to the viewer’s PC in the background and will reduce subsequent web page load times. This is not recommended for direct Adwords Landing Pages because Google has recently announced that high web page load time will negatively impact the Landing Page Quality Score.
5. Optimize Flash Files
Animating important stuff can make an impact on the visitor. If possible, avoid animated GIF images in website designs; instead use Flash with discretion. Always use optimized flash files. There are so many ways to reduce Flash loading time that I will be covering this in a separate article.

Planning A Web Design Strategy To Include Search Engine Marketing (SEM)

The phrase “web design strategy means a range of different things to different people, and involves more than merely “design decisions. The term seems to imply that the issue is about color, page layout and the use of Flash animations. Yes, these factors are part of the big picture, but the “bigger picture is about the overall design of your website, meaning its entire “architecture.

You need to find out how your site’s overall “information architecture affects its visibility to search engines. The truth is, specific web page elements like your navigation scheme and technologies like CSS (Cascading Style Scripts) or JavaScript can either interfere with or aid a search engine’s ability to “spider and rate your site. Sometimes an element can do both, at the same time!

The whole topic of a “site architecture or web design strategy that supports Search Engine Marketing (SEM) has really been quite poorly addressed. Many companies that do SEM consulting have less than state-of-the-art knowledge of how information architecture and design strategy affect a site’s usability and organic rankings. If your consultant, or your own research, is focusing only on search advertising, media buys and bidding processes, you are not getting the whole picture.

A top position in the Google results is useless if site visitors aren’t being converted into buyers. A successful site architecture and site design strategy will address the needs of both the search engines and your visitors/customers.

Directory setups

Generally speaking, the pages nearest the root directory are the most important pages of your site. Essentially, by placing them near the root you are telling the search engines your priorities, strengths, and focus.

One of the oldest and “wrongest SEO myths, however, is that search bots won’t “crawl farther down that a third subdirectory. This is not true now, if it ever was, because as long as related pages are linking with each other in a “spider-friendly way, the search engines will keep on searching. Many experts in the field recommend that the most important pages (up to 200, if you have that many) can be kept in the root directory. This means pages that are important to your target audience, not your consultant or IT expert.

Navigation is key

A key element of your site design is the navigation scheme. Sets of buttons are generally friendlier than pull-down menus (DHTML), but plain old hypertext links are even friendlier than those buttons. While it is true that these text links are easiest for programmers to format (a click with CSS), the site design must consider the preferences of the end users, not the site designers or owners.

The fact is, many usability tests and user focus groups reveal definite preferences among Internet users for intuitive buttons and those dynamic, pull-down menus. Even though some usability experts may not recommend these latter approaches, you really must consider how the users react to them, since it is their actions that lead to sales and rankings, not the theories of the tech squads.

File names, directories, URL’s

When queried on which URL is more memorable – domain.com/car/seats.html or domain.com/carseats.html – more than 90 percent of people in an online survey reported preferring the one without the subdirectory. A surplus of “forward slashes” is a common complaint heard by site designers who take the time to check in with actual users.

Many SEM experts create extra subdirectories as a means of adding another keyword in a URL, assuming that it will help ranking. It is fairly well established that keyword-rich title tags are far more beneficial than keyword-rich URL’s. Never forget for whom you are creating those URL structures. It’s the users. URLs that are easy for users to remember are also easy for them to pass on to others.

Web page categories

Some usability professionals have broken web pages down into seven specific types, while others assert that there are 11, or an even dozen, or more. The actual number is not really that important. The knowledge to take away is that there are different types of pages that SEM-oriented web strategies must consider. Which ones you will employ depends both on your type of business and your approach. And how you will conceive, design and promote each web page will depend to a great extent on the type of page that it is.

Some web page types are home page, category/gallery page, advertising (landing) page, product page, news/media page, form page, services page, shopping cart page, search/results page and “credibility page. Each one naturally requires a different approach. It would be silly to optimize your product page the very same way you optimize some other kind of page, since optimization and design strategies differ according to many factors, not the least of which are the calls to action (CTAs) for each page type.

Layout, look and feel

Naturally, layout strategies will be as varied as the different page types, and a product page will not work according to the same principles as a news page. Of course, you also have to have an integrated and consistent overall design. When you are planning for a site, you need to focus not just on the overall effect, but all the individual ones that are put into play on each page. There must be some overarching sense to the site, while still allowing for differences at the page level.

Successful site design and web strategy entails issues of language, design, color, shape, layout, look and feel. The strategy must make sense while allowing for sufficient flexibility and creativity “along the way.” Certainly you want to improve the ability of search engines to access your keyword-rich content, but the bottom line is that you want to increase those site conversions. Keep your eyes on the prize and stay vigilant.

What’s the longest book you have ever read?

Okay, so I went to Barnes & Noble on Saturday, picked up two books, Push (the movie Precious!! It’s so great), and Les Miserables. So I think I’m going to finish Push either today or tomorrow (I don’t want it to end though) and I plan on reading Les Miz in the start of December, since it’s so long, and I want to squeeze in Gulliver’s Travels and Secret Live of Bee’s in before December (lol yes I have to schedule these things.)..

Anyways, the point is Les Miz is like 850 pages long, ABRIDGED!! So hopefully I can finish it by mid January (because I usually do less the holiday week, so I think it’s good. So by far, it will be the longest book I have ever read..

Be mindful of what you’re telling prospects. Tell them too much and there’s no need for them to sign up. Tell them too little and they won’t trade their email address for your information. Email Capture Page or squeeze page optimization is a very careful balance between giving too much and too little information. Generally, the best squeeze pages are those placed totally above-the-fold.

Just How Hard Can it be to Sell Digital Products Online?

Well some of the top marketers make it look easy don’t they, but one of the main attributes to this success is just plain old hard work. It all depends on your work ethic and attitude and what methods you use. So with this in mind let’s look at some options for niche products.
Affiliate and SEO Tactics

1. First and foremost we begin by searching for the product to sell;
There are a few choices that you can use like ClickBank, Paydot.com or RegSoft, these are all loaded with thousands of digital products. Make your choice with careful consideration, for this example we want to find a more *niche* orientated product.  Once you have made your choice join the affiliate program and check to see what promotional materials are available.

2. SEO (search engine optimisation)

So you have your product, next comes the SEO which is probably the most important element in the whole process. A good idea is to set the domain name to match your product with the magic word FREE; example: (yourproductforfree.com). You can see what an impact this process makes in the search page itself (Google free.com for an example). People who land on this search page are more likely to click your ad than say a sponsored one. If you look for products that *aren’t as popular* you have a better chance of ranking higher for that product with little competition. Do a bit of research on your keywords with Google keywords tool, put in your exact phrase to see what the competition is like. You will want to see low search results for your exact keywords to make your campaign more feasible.

Point to remember, make sure your product offers a free version; obviously you will make your commissions when a customer upgrades.

3. Promotion
Do email campaigns, if you don’t have a list then use a safelist. If you’re not sure what a safe list is then just Google it. Turn out some articles and posts to review the product then submit them to article directory’s’. Do a press release pointing out all of the benefits about the product. Join two or three forums and find a relevant thread that matches your product; spend a little time on generating a good signature box for your bio. Give some thought to the right identity when joining forums; try to be consistent with your brand and U.S.P (unique selling point).

It’s a good idea to use all the power and flexibility of the social networks especially the likes of StumbleUpon and Digg, but also MyBlogLog or FaceBook, look for the high traffic networks, do some research on this. At this point I would mix it up a bit and set up my own minisite to maximise exposure. If this is beyond your experience don’t worry there are plenty of free ways that you can utilise mini sites by picking the right affiliate program which can help you to set it all up. And of course a hosting account is essential.

Another great resource for your promotions is Squidoo and Hub Pages theses are especially useful, make sure you surf around your category and leave comments on other lenses and Hubs to generate links back to your product. Look for some popular Blogs like Problogger and CopyBlogger to drop some more comments; these popular blogs have huge traffic.  Make good meaningful comments, don’t just leave a one liner, put some thought into it, you’d be surprised on how many bloggers click through your link if they find it interesting.

If you have some cash to spare then i would highly recommend running an ad campaign through the likes of Google Adsense or Yahoo. To give you an idea of a search page, type in *free.com* you will see some examples and variations of the word FREE in the URL and ad body content.

So to sum up the three main areas

Find your niche product
Research your keywords and phrases
Promote through multiple platforms

It may seem a lot of hard work but the rewards can more than compensate, stick to your task and never waver, be prepared to change tactics if needed. Keep track of your responses and analyse your traffic and sales.    Good luck and prosper.
