Optimize Your Landing Pages, Increase Your Sales

One of the newest and most talked about Internet marketing strategies these days is Landing Page Optimization. Your Landing Page Design can make or break your conversion rate.

All the search engine optimization (SEO) Internet marketing and pay-per-click (PPC) advertising isn’t going to create the sales you want with bad landing pages. You’d be just wasting your time and money.

And the truth is that almost EVERY page on your website is a landing page, except for your Privacy Policy, Terms of Use or Service, and possibly your About page.

I’ve seen websites more than DOUBLE their conversions with landing pages that are properly designed to convert traffic to conversions…those opt-in sign ups and direct sales.

Think about it — doubling your sales without increasing your PPC advertising or without increasing your SEO efforts! How much money could that put in your pocket?

When you take advantage of strategies like that, that’s when you start beating out your competition!

What’s Landing Page Optimization All About?

When searchers come to our websites from the search engines, they are in a path from one website to another.

We have to interrupt that process, drawing these searchers into our website and into our story.

We must balance the connection with our visitors and make an emotional connection, while offering them real substance, as well.

We MUST answer these questions:

1. where am I?

2. what can I do here (what is your offer)?

3. Why should I look here and STAY rather than click away? This MUST be answered in the top 4 to 4/12 inches of your Web pages (above the fold)

How Do You Begin Optimizing Your Landing Page Design?

First, start by clearly explaining what you want your website visitors to do and WHY they should do it.

Why should they buy from you or opt-in for future contact? What’s in it for them?

Why should they choose you over other websites they can visit? What separates you from your competition?

Essentially, what’s your Value Proposition?

You should be able to clearly explain the advantage to your website visitors in 2 to 3 short sentences.

Right now, if you’re not sure exactly how to describe your Value Proposition, you’re surely NOT alone! The great majority of people I coach with their websites are in the same boat, when they start out.

My suggestion: Start brainstorming and making good notes. It also helps to have the input of a Internet marketing consulting coach outside your business, who can help you clearly define and explain what you offer your website visitors in a compelling manner, without using your industry jargon and lingo.

Reduce Anxiety from Your Purchase and Opt-in Processes

Anxiety can also be defined as fear or concern. Now, you can never have a anxiety-free website, if you sell a product or service or if you seek an opt-in email address.

Anxiety occurs in opt-in sign up processes, when providing an email address. When making a purchase, providing credit card information causes anxiety.

But how can you REDUCE the anxiety to the least level possible?

There are many techniques you can follow to accomplish this.

One of the best examples is to post your Privacy Policy page link right next to your sign up button, for your opt-in contact. This helps reassure your visitors you aren’t selling their email address and will generate a higher opt-in conversion rate than not posting your privacy policy, all other things equal.

Other anxiety reducing techniques are:

1. emphasize credit card security when ordering

2. offer pricing guarantees

3. deal with product | service quality concerns with guarantees and third-party certifications, awards, etc.

These techniques must be used at the exact point where the anxiety occurs.

Next, Reducing Friction from Your Web Pages

Friction can also be defined as annoyance and irritation. To maximize your sales and opt-in conversion rate, you need to minimize the friction all across your website.

Friction occurs in the prospect’s MIND, not really on the page.

It is a Psychological resistance to a given element in the sales process.

So, how can you reduce friction?

One way is to limit fields to the minimum number needed for both purchase and opt-in forms. Friction = Length and Difficulty.

While space here limits a complete discussion of all the techniques you can take advantage of, another way to limit friction is to make your landing page design take advantage of natural eye movement, working with it, rather than against it. You’ve got to be careful with multi-column designs.

Wrapping it Up

Consider the value to you of an Internet marketing consulting coach, who can train you to maximize your landing page design, do-it-yourself and at an affordable cost.

Using Landing Page Optimization techniques will help you potentially DOUBLE your conversions…your direct sales and opt-in sign ups…without increasing your PPC advertising expenses and without requiring higher SEO rankings.

This is real money we’re talking about. :-)

This could turn out to be the KEY element missing from your Internet marketing plan.

Email Marketing Software Boosts Sales with Landing Pages

Email marketing software has clearly proven itself as not only an important component of the marketing mix, but also as a pivotal medium for driving up sales. The Direct Marketing Association recently conducted a study that determined there is a return on investment of almost $50 for every dollar spent on direct email marketing. While that statistic is definitely staggering, it begs the questions: What key elements are important to convert emails into sales? And how do you use your email marketing software to achieve that amazing ROI?

The first goal is always to get people to open your email marketing campaign. For the time being, however, let’s assume you already have a captivated audience that has eagerly opened your message. Once opened, we’ll assume you have spent an adequate amount of time creating compelling copy for your email campaign that clearly explains to your reader exactly what you’re offering. Now comes the important part, where you want to take them from your email and onto your website where you can complete the sale.

Many marketers will include big bold calls to action in their email marketing campaigns that explicitly direct the recipient on what to do next. For example, phases like “Click here now” or “Quick! Click To Buy Now. Limited Quantities Going Fast” are all good calls to action. Other marketers however, take a more passive approach and write something a bit mellower, like “Learn More” or “Additional Information”. Depending on your audience and the product you are selling, you will have to choose an appropriate method. But, if you find one doesn’t work in your email marketing campaigns, then you can always switch to the other.

Just getting them to click is only the beginning of the battle. One of the most important pieces of the puzzle that can make or break your sale and really drive home the effectiveness and ROI of your email marketing campaign is the page you bring the person to, also know as the “landing page”.

A landing page does not have to be your homepage. Most marketers have found that with email marketing, much like search engine marketing, often times a custom landing page just for the specific campaign is the most effective. This is not to say that your homepage is not a good source of information, but it may be so cluttered with other distractions (like other products) that the user gets confused.

A custom landing page for your email marketing campaigns should be directly related to the link that was clicked. For example, if the reader clicks a link talking about a certain type of widget you have for sale, then the landing page should focus almost exclusively on that widget. After all, intuitively we know the user expressed interest in this widget, so why would we take them anywhere else but to the quickest route to close the sale for the widget?

Good landing pages for email marketing campaigns have a few common elements:

1. Less Is More
You may have tons of products and many things you want to say, but please restrain yourself. The old marketing philosophy of “keep it simple” completely applies to landing pages. By the time someone gets to your landing page, they’ve already opened your email and clicked on a link, so the last thing you want to do is make them work even more to find the information they’re looking for.

2. The page is an Extension of The Link They Clicked
When someone clicks a link in your email marketing campaign, they should see information directly related to that link. If someone, for example, clicks on one of your call to action statements about a particular product, the moment they get to your landing page, that product should be staring back at them. If someone clicks a link and then finds themselves looking at totally unrelated information, it takes less than a second to close your website and, suddenly, you’ve lost the sale.

3. Don’t Oversell Your Product and Scare Your Customer Off
While this point does tie into the “less is more” philosophy, it does warrant its own section because all too often businesses will attempt to cram every teeny tiny bit of information onto a webpage. I refer to this as ‘overselling’ because you are presenting the user with so much more information than they need to make the purchase. In fact, it’s just hindering your ability to close the sale. We’ve all probably seen the sales pages on the internet that seem to scroll endlessly, touting benefit after benefit about why a certain product is the greatest product in the world. Those make for the worst kind of landing pages for your email marketing campaigns because every time users have to scroll, they get more time to give up on the sale.

Tell people what they need to know and then stop. If you want to provide a link on your landing page for detailed specifications, that’s totally acceptable, but don’t make your page intimidating because it’s trying to cram so much information into your customer’s mind.

4. Make It Obvious What You Want the User to Do Next
If the goal of your landing page is to get someone to click the ‘buy now’ button, then make sure that button is very obvious. There is absolutely nothing wrong with having a big button on your page that clearly tells the customer ‘I’m the next step’, like ‘Click here to buy now’. If, however, your goal is to generate phone calls, then make sure your phone number is prominently displayed. If people have to guess what the next desired action is, then they may guess wrong or, worse yet, not guess at all and just leave.

With the above tips, you will be able to create well crafted landing page that will help boost the ROI of your email marketing campaigns. Lastly, make sure you are using a quality email marketing software that will track the clicks in your email marketing campaign so you can get instant feedback on the action, from the point users open your email, leading up to the point they get dropped on your landing page.

Is this an example of symbolism?

I need a symbolism poem, and cant find one. is this an example? do you know any famous poets that use symbolism?

There is no frigate like a book
To take us lands away,
Nor any coursers like a page
Of prancing poetry.
This traverse may the poorest take
Without oppress of toll;
How frugal is the chariot
That bears a human soul!

No, Emily Dickinson wasn’t a symbolist poet. Symbolism was a 19th century French phenomenon. Look up the works of Charles Baudelaire, especially his “Fleurs de Mal” (”Flowers of Evil”).

MTG R/W/G deck idea… feedback & advice?

Earlier in the day I was reading an article from the Wizard’s page and ran into some inspiration for a deck. I can’t really think of what to change, and this deck has some potential. Just curious what the community thinks, would this do well in tournament? If not why.

CREATURES:
4x Rosheen Meanderer
4x Protean Hydra
4x Apocalypse Hydra
4x Birds of Paradise
4x Mayael’s Aria
SORC./INSTANTS:
3x Earthquake
3x Banefire
4x Lightning bolt
4x Path to Exile
PLANESWALKERS:
2x Garruk Wildspeaker
LANDS:
5x Plains
4x Forest
7x Mountains
4x Rootbound Crag
4x Sunpetal Grove

Love the whole X mana idea, pretty beast.
This deck has great potential. With the right cards in hand you can kill off your opponent pretty quickly.

Hamletback Goliath would be beast here. Whenever a creature comes in, you can put X +1/+1 counters on Hamletback, where X = creature’s power. That ability, added with Protean Hydra = WOWW.

A creature that would fit the theme (sort of) is Flameblast Dragon. When it attacks, pay X(R), and it deals that much to Target creature or player.

One of Obama’s biggest lies yet?

On the anniversary of the moon landing, Obama told the crew of the Apollo space station, “The country continues to draw inspiration from what you’ve done. I should note, just personally, I grew up in Hawaii, as many of you know, and I still recall sitting on my grandfather’s shoulders when those capsules would land in the middle of the Pacific and they’d get brought back and we’d go out and we’d pretend like they could see us as we were waving at folks coming home. And I remember waving American flags and my grandfather telling me that the Apollo mission was an example of how Americans can do anything they put their minds to.”

According to Obama’s biography, he lived in Jakarta Indonesia as a child from 1967-1971 with his mother and stepfather. It wasn’t until he was 10 years old that he moved to Hawaii, and he was only 8 when the moon landing occurred.

Did he lie?

How To Land Jobs With Landing Pages

We’ve come a long way from job hunting in the classifieds. Today, we look to the web and investigate many different sources. Employee websites, job boards, association websites, higher education career centers, job search engines and blogs all offer information on jobs. Yet, with so many diverse sources online the question remains…How can companies most effectively inform job seekers about new jobs?

One of the most popular options is to post jobs on a large internet job board. Jobseekers use keywords to refine search results but will often pull up irrelevant jobs. For instance, the keywords “medical director” will pull up any listings with the word “director” or multiple listings of the same job. Job boards may not have all the available jobs as they rely on employers to pay for postings.

So disgruntled are jobseekers from this type of job search that they are now turning to social networking sites to find contacts with information on jobs. Networking will help jobseekers learn about positions not advertised on the web. However, it takes time to develop relationships and people may be wary of those outside their network. Why would you give inside information about a job in your company to a friend of a friend who “friends” you on Facebook?

Jobseekers need real time information on jobs to find the best opportunities for their career path. Companies should use a real time method for reaching job seekers to fill vacant positions quickly. One that is low cost, easy to update, and found in standard job search results.

The answer might just be in our in box. Landing pages are often used for advertising retail promotions. They present real time information, such as a Memorial Day sale or a movie club trial membership. They often communicate a temporary call for action. Check out our new deals! Limited time offer! The Landing Page gives just enough information to entice a visitor to link to the main website.

Companies are now beginning to use landing pages to advertise jobs. A landing page appears as a message between the original link, such as a logo or banner ad and the homepage. It is designed with a specific audience in mind–one that will be motivated to click through a link to the website. It is a sophisticated billboard that asks the visitor, “Do you want to know more about this job? Let me lead you to the information you want-click here.” Vertical job search engines are offering this feature through their directories and have templates for companies to design their own landing pages with text, links and pictures.

An additional perk for advertising jobs on landing pages is they are read separately by web crawlers, improving a website’s SEO (search engine optimization) or ranking on a search engine. When a job seeker searches with the keywords “nurse jobs” in a general search engine, landing pages with matching keywords will be listed in the search results. Companies can change the text of their landing pages at any time, making real time new jobs available to jobseekers immediately.  The landing page is an excellent tool for companies promoting new job openings as they assure jobseekers they have finally landed in the right place.

The Best New Facebook Marketing Campaigns In 2010

Any business can put up a Facebook fan page. Not every business can create a page that excites users, encourages them to share the page with friends, creates a viral buzz and adds thousands of new fans. Here are a few of the best new social media marketing campaigns on Facebook that we have seen this year:

Bing

Microsoft’s Bing ran a campaign on Zynga’s hit game FarmVille recently. If a user became a fan of Bing’s Facebook Page by clicking on a Bing ad, they would receive FarmVille cash. The Bing ad was located on the bottom of the FarmVille landing page. It was a good harvest – Bing’s Facebook page went from 100,000 to 500.000 users – 400,000 new fans – in only one day.

Integrating a Facebook social game into a marketing strategy is a great idea. FarmVille has 83 million monthly users and 28 million daily active users. Only about 1% of all FarmVille users participated in the 24 hour event. This engagement number is awesome, especially if you are a new search engine like Bing who is trying to promote an alternative to Google.

Target

Target Retail Stores had an innovative and altruistic Facebook campaign on Valentine’s Day. They gave away $1 million to a charity that their Facebook fans could choose. The fans chose the charity with a Facebook app called a “Super Love Sender.” The charities Target supported were: Kids in Need Foundation, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, The Salvation Army, United Through Reading Military Program, and the United Way. There was a real-time graph to see how the charities competed with each another. The winning charity? The St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Digicel – Jamaica

Digicel – the biggest cellular phone company in Jamaica – just announced that its’ Facebook fan page has over 100,000 users since the launch of their “Giveaway” campaign. The giveaways include free handsets, phone credit and “Fast Finger Giveaways” – where they put a code on their Facebook page and the first person who dials the code wins free phone credit. Over the last 30 days, there was a 298 percent increase in the number of participants. Digicel also posts videos, advertisements, news releases, photos and a social event calendar on their Facebook page.

Red Bull

What does Red Bull have up its’ sleeve these days? Their Facebook page is loaded with skateboarding and extreme sport events, races, parties and a game called the Red Bull Stash – an adventure where you search for cases of Red Bull that have been hidden all over the country. All you do is enter your zip code to get clues for your city and your Red Bull scavenger hunt begins. After you find one stash you will be on the way to the final stash – an unmentioned grand prize.

Kellogg’s Cereal

Kellogg’s Cereal created an altruistic campaign on their Facebook page called “Kellogg’s Cares” where they donate food, educate young people about proper nutrition and work to reduce global malnutrition. They have a partnership with Feeding America – the nation’s leading domestic hunger-relief charity. Kellogg’s produced a series of videos about hunger that are posted on Facebook. They had 200,000 new fans in less than a month, and the vast majority were women over 25. That is the audience they wanted to reach. The impact could not be directly measured but it had interactivity and got people involved and emotionally invested in the campaign.

Domino’s Pizza

Domino’s has taken off their cooking gloves and they have come out swinging – and they’re doing it on Facebook. It all revolves around “The Pizza Turnaround” where they listen to customer complaints and then act upon them. They have a “Celebrate” page promoting a taste test where they beat Papa John’s and Pizza Hut. They have a “Stop Puffery” campaign (also on Twitter) that makes fun of Papa John’s. They also have coupons for their fans and commercials with “focus groups” – groups of people who tell Domino’s how to improve their pizza and then how Domino’s improves it.

It is only the beginning of the year. We will post more good Facebook social media marketing campaigns as soon as we see them.

How do you make a “homepage” tab for a fan page on facebook?

I noticed on other business’s facebook pages that the landing tab is called “homepage” with a whole bunch of graphics specific to their company. Anyone know how to do this?
Sorry, I should have mentioned that it’s my own page, I am the admin. How do I add a tab that is the homepage of my website?

Well, if your asking how to do it on your created page, then go to settings and it should say landing spot and change that to homepage.

If your asking how to change it so you can view others pages, you can’t do that because it’s up to the owner of the page to decide where it takes you when you click the link

Ezine Marketing: Landing Page Success Tips

Also known as the “name Squeeze Page” or “lead Capture Page”, you can build your mailing list by funneling all of your would-be subscribers through the creation of a landing page. Not only do you do the work just once, your traffic driving efforts can be focused onto just one effective method.

The following are tips in creating a successful landing page that converts visitors into subscribers on a very huge percentage.

Success Tip 1: Offer a freebie in exchange for your visitor’s email address. I very much endorse this method of building your mailing list. You can offer a special report or a sample of your paid product to your visitor in exchange for their details such as name and email address.

Success Tip 2: The landing page must be written professionally. When writing your page, treat it as if you are writing a sales letter. While you are not necessarily making a hard sale or try to get someone to buy your product upfront, being able to entice your visitors to give their details to you is just as important as selling.

Success Tip 3: Other than your opt-in form and perhaps important disclaimers and terms, there shouldn’t be any other links on your landing page.

Success Tip 4: Rub in the benefits of the freebie you are offering more than a mere subscription to your newsletter. You should focus most of the attention of the letter on encouraging your prospective visitor to download your free offer. Later, you gently remind your prospect that he or she has nothing to pay but just merely subscribe to your newsletter in exchange for the freebie.

As a final reminder and conclusion, in order to build trust, you can include your hand-written signature or a photo of yourself explaining where you are coming from and how you can help your visitor through your free report on offer.

How to Cite Sources

Citation is an important act in the field of writing; it is to secure the ethics of writing rules and writing practice. Citing sources is a practice that is meant to avoid plagiarism and has a basic purpose to credit the real author or the writer for his thoughts and ideas. It is commonly observed that the work on any print or online media is used in plagiarized form. This is done by majority of students and the small companies to yield businesses. However content published without quote is never honored, it is a rule and a must do thing to cite sources form where the hint and the content is extracted to write a new page.

Citation does have different disciplines and have certain objectives that are to be followed. Citing sources is a little time taking but it is being honest with the work. The graduates and the undergraduate students commonly practice the citation. Many questions arise regarding citation like what to and how to cite sources. Optimizing your Landing Page

Employing smart web design when it comes to your Landing Pages can be difficult sometimes. After all, landing pages are there for many reasons. What’s most important about your landing page is that you establish who you are as a company and that you give them a call to action to enter your site. Lets talk about some ways I’ve found that your landing pages can be designed to get the most done.

The first objective of your landing page I mentioned was about establishing who you are as a company. Write a good headline at the top of the page and make sure it is well known whose web page they have landed on. This ensures that the potential customer experiences your name and your brand as soon as they land on that page. This is important as you want them to remember your company name from the first moment they experience your website. Also, depending on the specific use of the landing page, give the reader some peace of mind that when they move on, they’re going to be finding what they’re looking for.

Just as important is the call to action that you present to your visitors. This can be in the form of strategically placed navigation buttons, advertisements for current products or services, or just good copy that calls them to action. In the sales world, many times you only have one chance at pitching to a customer. The same goes for your landing page. You want this page to be designed in a way that your visitors are drawn in, interested, and compelled to move on with the sale or interest in a sale. All of this can be accomplished with words such as “Click Here to Try it Now”, or “Join Thousands of Happy Users” in conjunction with some appropriately large and noticeable buttons for them to click.

In conclusion, we should establish that landing pages are like no other page in your website design. This is not a home page by any means as it has a completely different objective. Remember that your landing page has absolutely no navigational structure and is only a means to point potential customers to your real digital storefront. So try using some smart web design when creating a landing page for your website and hopefully the customers will start pouring in. 5 Successful Landing Page Optimization Tips

In order to increase your affiliate sales, you need to optimize your landing page, so that it helps promote your affiliate product beforehand. Thus, the look and feel of your landing page is very important. Since you want your visitor to do click on your affiliate link and do nothing else, you must always keep your Landing Page Free from all distraction. Here are some tips that you can use to improve your landing page and ultimately, increase your income.

Discover The Secrets To Landing Page Optimization

Page Relevancy

Relevancy is important. Your landing page must be able to match the keyword and products to your target audiences. This is because relevant content draws in more relevant visitors and they are more likely to purchase from you. Make sure that your landing page promotes product related to your content and nothing else. If your affiliate product is baby care lotion, then “baby care tips” or “caring for baby skin” must be the content on your webpages. Don’t sell a beauty product on electronics webpage. This is a major mistake make my many affiliates.

Be Direct

Clarity is important because no visitor wants to guess what your landing page is all about. If your site is so unclear that your visitor has to guess, then your landing page has failed the optimization test. Always keeps your content clear and direct. People goes away almost immediately, when they have no idea what you’re offering.

Strong Headlines Are Important

Your headline is the first thing you must look at in your landing page. Whether you attract or repel your visitors depend largely on your headline. Your headline must capture the emotions of your readers in order to get them to read further. Keep the headlines simple and clear, and always focus on the benefits.

Talks About Benefits

Another important key to successful landing page optimization is product benefits. You start by going through all the benefits and write down the major ones. Then use the benefits to tell them how great their lives will be, after using the product. And you must tell it in such a way that touches their emotions. Your readers are more likely to purchase from you, when they knows what they are getting.

There is a difference between benefits and features, you must not confuse them. The results that a client gets after using the product are the benefits, while the things that a product can do are the features. So, to improve your closing rate, focus on benefits more than features.

Make Your Site Professional

A sloppy website will not look good and will not gain trust from visitors. You have to make sure that your landing page looks as professional as possible. Here is a basic guide to making your website look professional:

  • Text size between 10 to 14 in Verdana or Arial Fonts
  • Background must be bright and text must be dark
  • Have no more than 3 columns
  • Keep all the links in standard blue text
  • Your landing page must have the images of your product
  • Thoroughly edit the page’s content for any grammatical or spelling errors

Many people build landing pages, but fail to optimize them. So, when their product don’t sell online, they wander why. Eventually, the affiliates conclude that the product simply doesn’t sell online and give up. Don’t let this stop you. Just follow these methods above, optimize your landing page and increase of your conversion rate.

Laptop images look squished!?

i have a brand new laptop from Dell…it’s in perfectly good shape but the only thing I don’t like about it is how my images look on it. For an example when i go to my myspace page and look at my images or other people’s images they look smushed or something…like something is squeezing it…that’s the best way i can describe my problem….i’m not sure if having a wide screen laptop has anything to do with it….and i have tried adjusting the screen resolution already…that didnt do anything….helpppppppp!!

you need to al djust the resolution for widescreen, when you ajust it look at the pic of the screen above the adjuster and watch the shape of it , you want it to go wide, mine is at 1280 x 800 i think , just watch the pic of the screen as you move it and you will see what i mean, then you have to apply it and then ok it to stay that way

Beware The Squeeze Page Spammer

Leopards don’t change their spots. With laws and accepted standards in regards to unsolicited bulk email marketing, a.k.a. spam, having tightened in recent years, so too has the resolve of spammers to find loopholes to justify their wicked deeds.

The growth and now almost complete global acceptance of confirmed-opt-in standards (sometimes called “double opt in”) for email newsletter subscriptions has been encouraging. It has certainly gone a long way towards distinguishing between legitimated, wanted periodic emails and unwanted spam.

Confirmed-opt-in works like this: An ezine publisher seeking subscribers places a form on a webpage inviting people to submit their email address to subscribe. Of course, there is a risk that malicious submissions could be made, so the confirmed-opt-in subscription mechanism sends a confirmation email to the address provided, requesting that the owner of that email either reply to the email, or click on a specially coded link within that email. As the only person who has access to reading that request for confirmation is the true owner of the email address, a confirmation is solid proof that the subscriber is genuine and not added to the mailing list by some other party.

A confirmed-opt-in also provides the subscriber with the comfort of knowing they are dealing with an honest publisher. In short, if a subscription is NOT via a confirmed-opt-in method, web users are well advised not to provide their email address at all.

Given the now nearly universal acceptance of confirmed-opt-in subscriptions to email periodicals in order to distinguish them from spam, it should not surprise that spammers themselves have turned their attentions to exploiting the otherwise virtuous confirmed-opt-in mechanism into something that appears to legitimise their dirty spam marketing practices.

Welcome to the new and nasty world of “confirmed-opt-in-spam”.

A growing trend in bulk email marketing (some of which is legitimate, some of which is not) has been the use of a “squeeze page”, also known as a “name-squeeze”. While such a marketing mechanism may be completely above-board, honest and spam-free, the worry is the growing trend of misuse of the squeeze page by spammers to create a confirmed-opt-in email list to which to send unsolicited marketing materials.

A squeeze page, of itself, is not an evil tool. Used properly, they can be a very effective and legitimate marketing mechanism. They work as follows:

An email publisher attempts to increase their subscriber base by offering a free gift to new subscribers to their newsletter or ezine. For example, the offer may be for a free PDF ebook, or a downloadable video clip or similar giveaway. The idea is that this extra bit of incentive will encourage more people to subscribe to the email publication. The subscriber receives a confirmation email to which they either reply or click a specially encoded link within the confirmation email. They are then either emailed the free gift or automatically directed to a web page from where they can download it for themselves.

In the hands of a spammer, a deceptively similar strategy is employed:

The spammer offers a free gift in return for your email address. When you provide your email address in anticipation of receiving the free gift, you receive a confirmation email. Again, either a reply or a click on an encoded link confirms that your email address is legitimate and that you are indeed the person requesting the free gift. The free gift is then supplied.

Did you spot the difference between the honest use and the spammer’s technique?

Unlike the honest publisher, the spammer does not tell you that you are subscribing or opting-in to receive a regular newsletter or future marketing emails. The person providing the email address and confirming it is only expecting to receive a single ebook or other free gift, unaware that they are now on someone’s mailing list and about to be bombarded with marketing emails.

Some very well known internet marketing “gurus” use and widely promote the use of this deception and misuse of Squeeze Pages, thinking that mere confirmed-opt-in or even the ability to subsequently opt-out makes it a legitimate practice. It isn’t. If such a shoddy marketeer sends you follow-up material without prior warning, without your express and knowing consent, that sender is spamming.

Beware of the squeeze page spammer.

Next time you see a free gift being offered online in return for your email address, check for these three things:

# Is there any clear mention that you are subscribing for future emails, or are you just being offered a free gift with no mention of an ongoing email relationship? (If the latter, why do they need to know your email address?)

# Is a detailed privacy policy displayed or clearly linked (not hidden or hard to find) that explains how and why email addresses are collected, whether privacy is assured or if they reserve the right to use it for other purposes, what your rights to removal from their database and future emails may be, and so forth? (A professional privacy policy is a rather lengthy statement for even the simplest of websites. Don’t place too much trust in single-sentence assurances.)

# Never forget the old adage: If the offer sounds too good to be true, then it almost certainly is.

Google Landing Page Guidelines

New Tactics on Google Pay-Per-Click Search

Small and medium businesses find it necessary to pay for search engine ranking and advertising in order to boost their sales. The primary goal of the advertiser is not to generate thousands of clicks, but to attract a potential customer or actual buyer with each click-through. The largest search engine on the Web, Google, has a reward system of sorts with higher or more frequent placement for ads that generate the most click-throughs.

Among all the pay-per-click search engines, Google Adwords is the largest network operator as of 2006. Depending on the search engine’s market reach, minimum price-per-click varies from $0.01 to $0.50. Common search terms can cost much more. Very popular keywords that draw lots of prospective customers are probably well-known to other businesses in your industry. With everyone vying for the same keywords, the price can be jacked up to several dollars per click!

One thing that Google uses to determine the cost-per-click (CPC) pricing for keywords is the quality score of the Landing Page. Google AdWords has recently revamped (see http://adwords.blogspot.com/2006/07/landing-page-quality-update.html), its quality scoring system for Landing Pages. The change affected a small number of sites. However, those sites saw significant changes to their min CPCs (minimum amount one must pay to have an ad displayed.)

Some site accounts went from minimum CPCs of $0.03 – 0.15 to $10.00. In order to adjust to the new Google Adwords changes, webmasters should first examine the document Google AdWords Site Guidelines (see https://adwords.google.com/select/siteguidelines.html)
These were the relevant points from that document that pertained to this situation:

1. Try to provide information without requiring users to register. Or, provide a preview of what users will get by registering.
2. Openly share information about your business. Clearly define what your business is or does.
3. Most internet users are concerned with understanding and controlling how websites use their personal information. In order to build an honest relationship with them, providing clear answers to these questions on your site is a must
4. Develop an easily navigable site.

This usually translated into:
1. Show a sample newsletter (i.e. any other content)
2. Create an “About Us” page (and call it exactly that in both the link and URL)
3. Create a “Privacy Policy Page” (and again, call it exactly that in the link and URL)
4. Create some sort of navigation for the website
Then webmasters should refresh with the Google Webmaster Guidelines (see http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=35769)

Google AdWords still has more quality traffic than any other PPC engine. It is essential to use Google AdWords effectively to bring the most quality traffic available to your website. The trick is ensuring Google thinks your page will assist their visitors in finding information (remember, the act of searching is a hunt for the answer).

To improve your quality score, go through every line of Google Site Guidelines (see https://adwords.google.com/select/siteguidelines.html) and ask yourself:
1. Am I following this guideline?
2. Could I make this guideline better from users standpoint?
3. Can the Google score program tell I am following this guideline?

Once you can confidently say you are following these guidelines, your quality score should improve dramatically.

Google is idealistic about how well they treat their users. User satisfaction is more important to their long term goals and success than advertiser satisfaction. This does not mean Google does not want satisfied advertisers, it just means that if there is a tie between interests.

When evaluating your website, pretend you are a random web visitor and think to yourself: Does this website answer all of my questions before I have to give up my personal information?

When the answer is “Yes”, it is time to check your quality score and see if Google AdWords agrees with you. Google only updates the scores a few times a year, the following website gives a Google prediction of your website:

How To Avoid “The Google Slap” With Your Adwords PPC Campaign

Google slap is a phrase used to describe a penalty that is imposed on Google Adwords campaigns where the landing pages used are not relevant to the ads. If Google suspects that your landing page is not relevant enough, they will raise the minimum bid amount for some or all of your keywords.

Many campaigns were hit with the Google slap because the Squeeze Pages contained content that was full of sales hype rather than being useful and informative. Pages that took a while to load were also hit with the Google slap.

If you would like to start using Google Adwords, take time to read this article so you can avoid the Google slap. Following these guidelines would be in your best interest because you want to pay as low of a bid as possible per keyword.

You’ll want to implement four key elements and be sure that they are in thematic agreement with each other and specifically targeted. Here are the four elements: the keyword phrase you’re bidding on, the landing page, the ad copy and the search queries people use to trigger your Adwords ad.

1. The keywords you’re bidding on. Keywords contain a group of words or are a phrase that you want to target for your ad. They should be relevant to the product you’re promoting, and a lot of people should be using the keyword phrase when searching to buy your product.

Start with what it is you are trying to sell and what people are searching for to find the most relevant and best performing keywords for your campaign.

There are several free and subscription-based keyword research services to help you build up your keyword list. These services will help you keep adding potential keyword phrases until you have a list of about 100 different phrases to use.

When you have a nice list of keyword phrases to work with, go through and find a few keywords that have good click-through-rates (CTR) that will attract a decent amount of traffic. Make sure that they’re not too competitive, though. This is important if you’re on a tight budget because you don’t want to spend any more per click as you have to. The more competitive a keyword phrase is, the more you’re going to pay.

Check whether or not keywords are likely to deliver sales by checking their “commercial intention” at: http://adlab.microsoft.com/Online-Commercial-intention/

2. Landing page. You’ll want to make a landing page for each keyword phrase that you use. It’s important to place the phrase between the Title tags and the Heading tags as well as in the main body of the page.

Use unique content to fill the page and use an editorial style rather than hyped up sales language. The content should be based around the topic of the keyword phrase.

Link to the landing page from other pages on your website, but be sure to use the keyword phrase as the anchor text for your inbound links.

3. PPC ad copy. You must include the exact keyword phrase you’re using in your ad copy.

4. Search query. After your Google Adwords campaign has ran for a while you can research the actual search queries that triggered your Adwords ad and see the CTR by selecting the keywords you want to look at and clicking on “See search terms.”

If you find a search query that is very relevant you can add it to your keywords list and make a new landing page specifically for that keyword phrase.

You can also check search queries for negative keywords. Negative keywords are irrelevant searches that trigger your Adwords ads and are unlikely to make you any sales. You should eliminate these negative keywords from your campaign by using the “Edit Campaign Negative Keywords Tool.”

By following these four steps you will build highly relevant Adwords PPC campaigns and most likely avoid the Google slap. This will keep your cost-per-click (CPC) low while improving your CTR.

5 Essential Elements for Every Web Page

There are 5 must-haves for every professional looking website. Seasoned web users will expect these standard elements, and you cannot expect visitors to stick around if even one of these is missing.

Consistent look & feel: This is the basic mantra of web design. When a user arrives at your site, they expect to see a consistent design throughout in terms of colors, fonts and general look and feel. If your website follows a different visual scheme on every page, it will look like a patchwork of pages, rather than one cohesive site. This immediately creates an image of un-professionalism in the minds of your potential customers, apart from being visually jarring. We recommend that you use one font throughout for headings and maybe two fonts for the text. Two primary colors work best with a third as a secondary color. Use a shade of one of the two primary colors for the secondary color. By adopting these fundamentals, you will ensure a unified, dependable and harmonious design.

Consistent navigation: The links on your website should be in the same place on all the pages. Do not make it unnecessarily difficult for your visitors. It is annoying to users, and gives the impression once again that you and your company are inconsistent and amateurish. Don’t make users work harder than they have to, to get information from your site. Always provide a way for a user to get back to your home page from every page of your site. Often, this is the page that is most familiar to any user and that is where they would instinctively like to return should they not find what they need immediately. If someone lands on a subsidiary page on your site from a search engine or through another site, don’t you want to provide a way for that new user to get to your home page?

Provide a search function: This is another standard feature that is expected by most people. If there is a specific bit of information that a person wants to find, don’t make him wade through every page of your site. Implementing a search function is easy and free.

Balance text and graphics: Avoid cluttering up your page with too many graphics. Remember, graphic-intensive sites take longer to load. Strike a good balance between essential content and bells and whistles.

Include phone number, logo, and tag line: Every page should have your phone number and contact details listed on it. It can be very frustrating to go to a company’s site and have no way to reach them except through a form or email. This could potentially turn off your customers. Including your logo and tag line on every page will serve as a constant reminder to your customers of what the site is all about.

Make sure every page of your site incorporates these top five elements; they are a necessary foundation for any effective website. The best way to do this would be to create an html template with these 5 elements which can then be used for all the pages in your site. Templates make it easy to include all of these and facilitate updates as well.

Web templates, created by professional web designers and online marketers, take what might be an otherwise daunting task for the small business owner and turn it into a quick and easy-to-use experience for you. Web page templates, also called mini sites or mini site templates, work exceptionally well as both professional Landing Pages attached to your existing business website or as a small stand-alone site.

If you are a busy small business entrepreneur, likely you do not have time to go out and get a degree in computer programming. Likewise, if you have just started your new business, the financing might not yet be available to hire a marketing team. Yet effective marketing is the key to finding your online niche market and giving them the products and services that they want and are willing to pay for.

This is when professional website templates come in handy. No special computer expertise is needed to come up with a great new marketing website promoting your wonderful business products and services, because all of the hard work has been done for you when you use web page templates.

All you need to do is add in your company logo and business name, plus any content you wish to convey to the buying public and ordering links. That’s all it takes to get your new Mini Sites up and running.

Because they are available at no cost to you, you can freely experiment with web templates for numerous types of marketing needs. Because the Internet offers a worldwide market, you might wish to create professional landing pages in the languages most often spoken by your customers. It is a simple matter to edit and customize professional website templates so that they meet your specific marketing needs of the moment.

Mini site templates can also be used as stand-alone websites of one to three pages in length. These can have content that will allow you to do a bit of market research based on the type of content you choose to list there. The research results can be helpful in planning future marketing campaigns as well.

Web page templates are also useful for making marketing announcements that would create havoc on your main business website. Changes to the html code often requires web designers, which can be costly. Instead, you can add a link to your homepage that takes visitors to web page templates that can serve as landing pages that let the world know about an upcoming sale, or even online classes being offered that utilize the products and services you provide from your company.

Web page templates offer the flexibility you need, with ease and convenience built in.
