I was recently asked by a potential client why I recommended Joomla! to be used for building their website.
Let me explain the benefits of using Joomla versus using anything else, and by anything else I mean comparing building a website using some type of WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editor, such as Frontpage or Dreamweaver, or building a website with a comparative type of software package.
1. Wordpress also has numerous free templates available and it makes Wordpress an extremely attractive option to build websites quickly and easily but it must always be kept in mind that Wordpress is essentially a blogging platform. Although it also has numerous plugins available to extend its functionality, it just does not have the raw power with regards to its underlying infrastructure to allow it to easily plug in something like a shopping cart, for example.
So what is the catch? It can’t be all roses?
Having worked with Joomla! for a couple of years (and before that, with its predecessor, Mambo) I can tell you exactly what the shortcomings are:
1.    Joomla’s membership capabilities fall far short of what they could be. There is very limited support for various access groups and access levels.
2.    Because it is so popular, it attracts a lot of attention and Joomla! sites get hacked quite often. The only solution for this is to be aware of your server security settings and to upgrade regularly to stay abreast of the latest Joomla! security updates.
3.    Joomla! might be a bit top-heavy for smaller sites, although it still remains the tool of choice for even my smaller sites – it does leave room for expansion later without having to upgrade to a different tool or product!
4.    Joomla!’s native search engine friendliness in the older versions leave a lot to be desired, although this has received attention in the latest upgrade. Despite this drawback, most of my Joomla! sites perform well in the search engines due to judicious use of various plugins to rectify this shortcoming.
Altogether, Joomla! is an excellent tool to easy on the eye and easily extendable.

Traveling can be frustrating when you land in the wrong place, even if it is not your fault. But one thing is sure. The visitors of your website will feel the same way – disappointed and even annoyed when they don’t find what you promised in a pay-per-click ad. Just think, a new person comes to your site, after reading an ad on Google. Your ad may read:

Get the latest fashion in
your size. Free shipping.
www.xxxxxxxxx.com

The Landing Page is the web page on your site seen by the visitor who clicks on this ad. Just like the airport, you are directing your guest to the arrival gate. When your visitors land at your site, will they find what they are looking for quickly and easily?

Here are two of the biggest roadblocks that your website can put in the way of people who are ready to buy.

1. Your visitors run away from your home page.
Let’s say that you have written an excellent pay-per-click ad for purple dress shoes that is generating a 15 percent click through rate. That means that 15 of every 100 viewers clicks on your ad to find purple dress shoes. And then, like the pilot on the airplane, you announce a new gate – your web site’s home page.

The home page shows purses, dresses, ear rings – anything but purple shoes. Your visitor will look and look. After 20 seconds, 30 if you are lucky, she’ll click the BACK button quickly and probably never return.

Solution: Make sure you direct your visitors to a landing page which shows them exactly what they are looking for – where it is easiest to convert them into a sale.

2. Your landing page doesn’t turn visitors into customers.
Conversion. Turning a visitor into a customer. That is what your landing page must do. If you don’t sell, no one buys.

Let’s say that the purple shoes buyers land on one of your web pages and see a picture of purple dress shoes, description of purple dress shoes and the words “PURPLE DRESS SHOES.”

“This is just what I want!” Mary Clotheshorse is saying to herself. “Purple dress shoes. I like the color. I like the style. I like the look. How do I buy?”

She looks up and down your page for a “Buy Now” button or “Add to Cart” link. Or maybe she doesn’t. About 15-20% of people who visit web pages don’t scroll past the first screen. After all of the search, she can’t find how to buy the purple dress shoes – so it’s back to Google to find another site.

What’s going on here? Mary can’t find how to buy. The web page has no clear CALL TO ACTION. Let’s face it. The website owner is the one to lead the visitor to buy.

Solution: Place a big, clear, easy to recognize BUY NOW button right where Mary can see it. At the top of the landing page and at the bottom of the landing page. Test the text on the button and the color.

Many sites are adopting the orange colored buttons of Amazon.com. That makes sense. After all, Amazon sells billions of dollars of online books and merchandise. Learn from a winner.

Study the websites of successful retailers. Master these two techniques to increase your conversions and you will see you sales increase dramatically. Your visitors will be glad they landed on your site. Now all you have to do is create the landing pages with the right tools to match the keywords and pay-per-click ads that you are using.

What is Direct Linking?

Direct Linking is when an advertiser or affiliate marketer, creates a link that is directly connected to an advertisers Landing Page.
The most common example is that as an advertiser, especially as an affiliate, you can create an ad that has your affiliate information coded into it, and if a person clicks on that link, they are then directed to the product or information landing page.   Your affiliate coded cookie is supposed to be set, and if the person  purchases the product you get credit for the sale and make a profit.
Another way is to have a domain name that is redirected or points directly to the specific landing page.   Of course, if you are an affiliate make sure your information is coded into the redirect or you won’t receive the credit.

Pros: Direct Linking

1. For a minimum cost you can quickly test an offer to see how well it converts before putting in the time and energy to build a website around the offer.   If the advertiser already has a great landing page that converts well, just use it and then move on to another project.
2. You don’t need to buy a domain or web hosting service.   You don’t need to have any coding know-how.   It’s very easy to get setup and use this technique to start making money.
3. By investing in your own domain name, you can eventually decide to build a site or have your own keyword rich landing page around the offer if it is working for you.

Cons: Direct Linking

1. Its very hard, if not impossible to get organic traffic.   You have to use Google adwords or a similar pay for advertising plan.   Even if you do purchase a domain name that has good keyword traffic, Google won’t give you a good quality score, hence, one less reason to send organic traffic your way.
2. You will be unable to build a mailing list.   And any decent internet marketer knows that having a qualified mailing list is worth its weight in gold.

A landing site not only focuses on your landing page it also has multiple pages, many articles, and useful resources for your potential customers.  In other words you are not just building a sales site, but a site that is richly filled with content.   Many internet marketers build entire blogs around a main offer and include related offers, called the upsell, as well.

Pros to Landing Sites:

1. Search engines and Google in particular, just loves these sites. T hey want their customers to get the best info possible.

2. If put together well, you can easily get a good quality score if you use adwords, meaning your keyword buys will be cheaper.   Also you can make your site keyword rich and attract better paying ads for adsense.

About Landing Pages

These are also know as a Squeeze Page or Opt-in Page.

Basically you purchase a domain name that suits your product, put together a one page site and maybe have couple of articles that contain links to your offer page.  This is far and away the most common affiliate way to market  an offer.

Pros to Landing Pages:
1. Very easy to get set up and started selling, compared to setting up a complete Landing Site.
2. Great for seasonal offers.
3. You can collect email addresses
4. Landing Pages are what is working right now, and done right, they have been proven to  work quite well at  converting offers.

Cons to Landing Pages:
1. You need really good copywriting skills, or hire someone who has them.
2. Takes more time and money to set up then Direct Linking, and still offers no conversion guarantees.
3. Its becoming tougher to get a good quality score when using Google Adwords
4. Its a certainty that Google is leaning more and more towards quality Landing Sites

Which way should you go?
Here’s a potential strategy.
If you are unsure about a certain product or niche, would like to do some quick testing, and possibly make some quick money, use direct linking. Direct Linking can work quite well for some short term income.
If the niche shows itself to have some potential, then build a Landing Page, and tweak it until it converts really well.
If your Landing Page is working, convert it into a full blown Landing Site by adding a blog filled with solid article content.

Pay per lead networks (also known and cost per action) networks don’t just accept you right away. They are the strictest of all affiliate marketing programs. I don’t care what eBook told you otherwise.

Azoogle, Copeac and others are top of the line. They will expect you to already know how to market. They will expect that you have a full-working website that already gets a lot of traffic. They have you fill out all this information: name, address, website, ask how many visitors you already receive to your website, what kind of marketing methods you are using (If you spam,they’ll ditch you in a hurry), etc.

Look at it from their point of view. They are working with big companies who are willing to pay big money for bringing in leads to their list because they don’t have the time to do it themselves. The CPA networks promise to deliver this to their customers, the big companies.

If they find out (and they do find out because you have to fill out ALL this information) that your website has zero traffic, they are not going to throw $60 a lead or even $2 a lead at you. Each CPA network will call you one on one by phone. It’s not like regular affiliate programs.

My recommendation is to first START with a normal affiliate program. Start by building a list. Learn to build a proper website. Learning to find a niche market. Learning to build a relationship with customers. I assure you that if you look for the short cut and least work to money, you won’t find it. Then move into a PPL/CPA network.

This lesson took me 1.5 years to realize this and I wasted a lot of time, and I’ve had to start all over again. Don’t make the same mistake.

The function of a squeeze page is to persuade visitors to give you their email address in exchange for your free offer of an ebook, report, software, video, or some other item of value. But if your squeeze page has leaks, you could be letting potential subscribers (ie; potential customers) slip through your fingers.

So, what is a leak? Specifically speaking, a leak is anything that allows a visitor to by-pass your opt-in and gain access to your special offer without entering their email address. Generally speaking, anything that distracts your visitor, or leads them away from your squeeze page could be considered a leak.

Feed Your Visitors Don’t Let Them Help Themselves

If your squeeze page re-directs your visitor to a download page, or a Thank You page with a download link after they enter their name and email address, you’re giving them an opportunity to help themselves. All they would have to do is take a look at the source code of your squeeze page (right click and select view page source) to get the URL of your download page, and go there directly.

You can eliminate this situation by only sending the visitor a download link via email. Make sure you tell your visitors to watch their inbox for an email containing the link to download their free product. This lets them know that if they want the product, they’re gonna have to pony up their email address.

You should also make the download URL something that’s not easy to guess. For example, if your give-away product is called: Easy Dog Training, don’t use: easydogtrainingdownload.com as the URL. Use something more cryptic, like: 9374-edtxdl.com. You may also want to cloak the link with anchor text, or use a re-direct, just so it looks clean.

One Way In – One Way Out

The reason why it’s called a squeeze page is because the visitor is given only two choices… Either accept the offer, or walk away. They already have the option to navigate away from the page, so you don’t want to offer up additional reasons to leave.. Your Opt-in Page should have no external links to your blog, or your affiliate sites, or your facebook page, etc… If you allow the prospective subscriber to visit another website, or go to another page, the odds of them returning to opt-in are statistically, very slim.

Keep Them Focused on the Carrot, Not the Stick

The SOLE purpose of a squeeze page is to build your list. Anything that draws your visitor’s attention away from your opt-in completely defeats that purpose. The only thing you want your visitors thinking about is receiving that free product. This is not the time to try to sell them something else, or confuse them with unrelated offers. You’ll have time for all that after they join your list. Make sure your copy is laser-focused and does a good job of getting the visitor excited about your free offer. When it comes down to it, you’re still selling a product… They’re just paying with information instead of money.

Remember that you can, and should, acquire more information as you develop the relationship between you and your customer. Make a template with your HTML editor, which you can use over again just by making minor changes to the information, depending on your present offer.

There are also a number of places on the Internet where you can find ready made templates – both for free and at no cost.

Graphics:

Graphics can project the image you want to have. Do you want to display only the product? Do you want to display the product and your logo for branding purposes? Though squeeze pages aren’t really used for branding – that should be an objective of your main site(s).

The offer:

You need a quality offer to entice the visitor to hand over her/his information. Preferably, this will be something of a free nature and should be something which solves a problem for the visitor. Free reports are great items for squeeze pages. And these items need not be your product but can be products for which you are an affiliate.

Remember that by using a squeeze page of your own, you acquire the customer information rather than the affiliate site capturing them first. And that is the goal of your squeeze page – to help you build your customer list!
