Based on the photos we’ve seen (which haven’t been officially issued by Microsoft), the Marketplace looks nothing like the app-purchasing scheme on current Windows Mobile devices — and that’s an incredibly good thing.
Office hub: Microsoft’s bread and butter, but so far we’ve just seen the hub itself — none of its deeper functionality like document editing. There’s an emphasis on OneNote and SharePoint Workspace that should be pretty interesting, however. Ultimately, based on the new UI paradigms and user experience directives of Windows Phone 7 Series, Microsoft is going to have to rebuild these applications from the ground up. As long as they’re able to make them super functional while keeping the Metro look intact, this should be a real win — we’re still curious as to how the company plans to cram all that information into a UI which is focused on doing away with visual noise. Hopefully MIX10 will shed some light on this as well.

Email: Relies on the pivot to switch between message views (unread / flagged / etc.), and has a color-coded system for differentiating between work and personal messages. Hopefully there’s an option to un-mix multiple inboxes as well, but it’s unclear so far. Multiple message management is onboard here, thankfully, though there’s also a lot of negative space in the app, which is a bit of a concerning (if beautiful) trend throughout the UI. We don’t expect any deep integration with services like Gmail beyond the contact syncing… though if Microsoft could pull labeling, archiving, and threaded messages off here, we can think of at least one editor who would be seriously inclined to switch to this platform. Calendar: One of the odder apps visually, it almost looks like a DOS UI, with a white-on-black / primary color presentation. There are differentiations for specific types of data, such as red and blue notation for personal items and work. As we said earlier, this is weirdly one of the most striking applications on the phone, with lots of interesting functionality tied to its visual elements, like little lines in the day boxes which represent appointments when you’re zoomed out to a month view. SMS: It’s barebones so far, but supports SMS and MMS, and it appears that the keyboard can be rotated to landscape for text entry. Let’s hope that’s an option in most places where input is required. Phone: Even barer bones. Chromeless is in full effect here. Internet Explorer: This is a big one, and Microsoft claims to have something newer and more based on the desktop IE than the current Windows Mobile / Zune browser. Features include multitouch pinch-to-zoom, “tabbed” browsing, and a new text rendering engine that brings supports sub pixel positioning for text. It’s not as fast as we’d like just yet, but Microsoft has more than half a year to work out the kinks, and at least the page rendering is accurate. Bing search: Search has contextual use in most apps, but from the Start menu it pulls up a separate, dedicated Bing app. When you search, Bing will try to decide what sort of search you’re doing and present an appropriate set of results — local results instead of web pages if you’re looking for sushi, for instance. You can pivot between views, naturally, and the results are presented in the standard Windows Phone UI instead of just a mobile browser version of Bing. Bing Maps: Addresses throughout the phone are turned into hyperlinks that can pull up Bing maps (phone numbers and email addresses are also intelligently discovered by the OS and made linkable), which includes pinch to zoom navigation and an auto-switch from map to satellite view at a certain zoom level. Microsoft is really pushing geolocation here, though we assume users will be given an option on whether or not they want to be found.

Common questions that probably run through your head are “what development tools should be used”, “how do I get web sites on the internet”, and “how to I create applications”. I am going to go briefly over these different questions and provide you with great resources to learn more.
Next step in the development process is that you need to obtain a domain name (or web site address) – this can be accomplished by searching google for domain names. A domain name example would be “yourwebsite.com”. You will also need to find a web site host to manage your files. A web site host simply stores your web site on a computer in a datacenter that can be accessed by the entire world wide web.
Now let me give you steps to learn how to build a basic site. First off, I want to give you an understanding of the best web development tools to use (in my opinion of course).
When building a web site, you can utilize many different tools. Some of the easiest tools to use are programs such as Frontpage. However if you are interested in working long term in this field, I would grab a book on Dreamweaver – dreamweaver is a program that must be purchased. You will also need a program called a FTP client. FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. This is a program that allows you to connect to your web site (at your hosting company) and add your files. Another program you may find useful for image design & development is Adobe Photoshop. This allows you to create quality and complex images, and comes with great tutorials.

A home page file is the first page everyone sees when they land on your web site. Your index file is a page named index.html, (could be index.php or a few others) – The most common is index.html. The sites Landing Page will always have an index file. For example when you go to google.com – you are actually accessing google.com/index.html. You can name any other pages whatever you want, but you always need an index file in the main folder of your web site.
After you have a main index page, you will need to create additional pages that you will eventually link together from your home page. Good examples would be contactus.html, about.html, jokes.html, and etc. You can create new pages in your web site editor (dreamweaver) and then you can go to your index.html file and create a link to the new pages you created using the link icon.

Two Guerilla Tactics for Landing a New Job
Unemployment numbers are looking pretty bleak. Everyday the news seems to bring
more stories of large and small companies alike laying off thousands of workers. As of this writing in January 2009 we are looking at a pretty tight job market. I saw a newswire story about a job fair for one company held in suburban Detroit. Four thousand people showed up for the one day event. I know due to the downturn in automotive sales that their region is hurting, but the job outlook seems to be pretty bleak just about everywhere. In this kind ofcompetitive market, what can one due to stand out among all the other jobseekers? Here are 2 job hunting strategies that will make you stand out.
(1) Your own website. Everyone puts their resume on line now, and so everyone has an email address and maybe a profile page at the large job posting portals. You should be using Facebook and Myspace to network in your industry, but not everybody has their own website. I think this is especially important if you are looking for any type of technical work. I would suggest you get a dot com domain name that includes your own name in it. Like bobsmithaccountant.com or technicalwriterbillgates.com Anything that includes your name. Get your name if it is available. Go to someplace like godaddy.com to purchase a domain name. Go someplace like hostgator.com for a cheap hosting account. There a a lot of tutorials about buying domains and c panel hosting on line. Twenty dollars will get you going. Use 1 of the millions of templates available and learn how to customize it a little. Hire an inexpensive web designer if you can afford it. Instead of the usual pages found in a business website, you can have a pages for education, accomplishments, your family life, goals, work history…anything that might tell a potential employer about you. Tailor your web design to the type of job you are looking for. An engineer will want their site to look clean and functional. A floral designer will want a more artistic design. Then you can plaster your web name everywhere on line that allows a link. Include it on your resume and Read the next strategy here.
(2) Send a useful item with your name and or domain name on it to prospective employers. This is like personal advertising. I am stealing a page from the advertising industry here. Millions of businesses advertise themselves by putting their names on matchbooks, pens, calenders, shoe horns, key chains, hats, mouse pads, almost any item you can think of. I think this works best on a local level. Let’s say you are a jewelry salesman looking for a job. Buy customized eye loupes or diamond tweezers or polishing cloths with your name, number and job title printed on them. Include your website address if you followed step 1 above. Then simply stop by every jewelry store in your area, ask for the manager, introduce yourself and leave the gifts and your resume. Easy.
If you are a SAP Trainer, or other software professional, mouse pads work very well. You need to tailor the items you are dropping off to the industry, but pens and mouse pads work almost anywhere. Are you a landscaper? How about work gloves with a little label sewn to it? I can think of dozens of items for almost any type of job. If you don’t have the bucks, how about a $5 pizza with your resume taped to it. Drop it off at lunch time. I bet they read your resume. These are just 2 ideas to help get your creative juices flowing. Now get out there and get that job!

When using Google AdWords, your landing page should always be highly relevant to the ad you’re placing. The higher the relevancy of your ad, the better the price of your CPC per keyword. That’s just how Google does business. Don’t try to fool customers by sending them to some page you think they’ll like better (or for whatever other reason you might have to do so); in the end you’ll just be sabotaging yourself. Google knows how relevant your ads are by how much time someone who clicks on your ad stays on your landing page, as well as how many times the searched keyword appears on your landing page. There are other factors in the Google relevancy equation, however, the entire formula isn’t revealed by Google.
Landing Page Optimization is equally as important as ad optimization in Google AdWords. If someone clicks on your ad and find themselves on a page which is not directly related to the ad they clicked on, the chances are that you’ve just wasted the money you spent on that click. Maybe your ads have a great CTR, but if your cost per conversion is horrible your CTR doesn’t mean anything. Say you’re advertising a Harry Potter book; don’t link the clicker to the bookstore homepage, link them to the exact page where the Harry Potter book can be bought. If your ad mentions some sort of specific deal, make that deal visible on your landing page.
As mentioned above, your Landing Pages are just as relevant as the ads they’re linked from; this is why you should also split test landing pages (if you own the domain you’re using to advertise of course). To split-test landing pages, make two identical ads and just change the landing page links (you want the ads to be identical because otherwise you won’t know what the discrepancy in cost per conversion is due to). If you don’t know anything about “web -copywriting” and you have access to the source code of your Capture Page, you should definitely read a web-copywriting book. Testing your own ideas and layouts of landing pages can also be great, but knowing what really sparks interest in the human mind could save you a lot of money.
