Web development with web 2.0? Its more than design, but how much is the coding work? ?

I have passionately studied the art of the web revolution of design and trying to understand the applications as well. I am a graphic designer and moreso an entrepreneur with a tech passion. I love incorporating technology to save workload or to innovate further than standards. My basic question for the moment is how much does it cost and what is required to make a website more web2.0 efficient. There should be a database, cgi, or maybe even .asp or .php, but i wanna know what exactly…that would help create small interactive community from scratch. I would like users to interact, leave realtime messages, and have a profile page…. all this without the healthy prices of trying to create the next myspace, but a subcultured community. Is this up someone’s alley or does anyone specialize or know the answer? would love it from the land of computer nerds… thx

There are different answers depending on your situation.

Firstly, what is “web 2.0″. Personally, I hate that phrase, but what it is really about is User Experience (UX), and what is that? Well, it’s about making things functional *and* aesthetically pleasing at the same time. UX encompasses the full range of User Interface (UI) design and Human Computer Interaction (HCI). This is also referenced to as “rich” interface design and what you end up with is a “rich internet application”.

There are many technologies that allow you to do this and depending on where you are in the process of developing your website, might influence which technologies you go with.

Given what you have said, it sounds like you’d like to add a few of these features to your website … you mention ‘real time messaging’ and ‘profiles’ and probably include commenting and so on. What you’re starting to develop is social networking and I would say that Facebook, MySpace (though I personally don’t like it) and Bebo are good places to find examples.

So, presuming your website has pages of content and you want people to be able to leave comments or discuss the contennt in real time, the most straight forward way to do this would be to add some Ajax to your HTML pages. The Ajax calls services (implemented as scripts perhaps) on your server that read and write to a database in a context that is specific to the page of content. The cheapest technologies I can think of to do this would be PHP, MySQL and JavaScript and there are plenty of script kiddies about who could probably add something cool to your web pages for a relatively low price.

If this isn’t something you want to try out yourself, you could use a service like rent-a-coder.com. You post your requirements and people bid for the work. You choose someone to do the work and pay the money in to escrow. Once the work is complete you release the money from escrow. I’ve used this service several times for various things including windows applications, web design and graphic design.
http://www.rentacoder.com/

The next level, is to look at the design of your website and see how you can translate what your website does in to something more akin with a desktop application. This is really where rich internet applications comes in and then you’re looking at Flex (Flash for developers), Silverlight or advanced Ajax websites, for instance. My personal preference is to combine Flex on the client with Java on the server. This can be done on the cheap using Linux, open source Java servers, Flex (the SDK is free, but the builder isn’t) and databases like MySQL. However, we’re talking about a level of complexity far in excess of the first example I gave.

The next level, is “enterprise” level applications which cater for many many users and are scalable. This is the difference between the cheap solution and enterprise, scalability. If you want to be able to support millions of users (e.g. Facebook) you’ll be combining various technologies on an infrastructure which needs to be able to grow as your site gains popularity, so lots of hardware and a complicated software setup. This is when you start to pay the big money.

Hope that helps.

Are You Still Using Merchant Provided Landing Pages

When you first decide to market a product or service as an affiliate, more often than not the merchant will provide a set tools for you to use in your campaigns.  These range from banners in all sizes, text links and maybe some form of interactive tools.  Sometimes they’ll provide landing pages or at the very least banners large enough to serve as stand alone landing page, or, you can mix and match banners to create a landing page of your own.

This is all well and good, in fact, merchants who want their affiliates to succeed should provide these tools.  However, by using the exact same tools as every other affiliate on the Internet you really have no way to set yourself apart from them and create a unique presence for your campaigns.

To avoid this and give your traffic a unique pass through from your site to the merchant site you have three options.  Create your own creatives, hire someone to create them for you or to purchase premade landing pages or creatives that target the niche you’re marketing.

When it comes to pre-made landing pages, one of the nice things about many on the market is they provide you with a low cost alternative to hiring out the work and a way to set yourself apart from affiliates marketing the same programs you are.  In addition to that, if they’re designed correctly there will also be a creative way to easily insert portions of your own text or information to make the page even more unique.

More often than not, pre-made landing pages and other creatives are easy to modify.  Designers typically make it so that all you have to do is insert your affiliate link and your good to go.  If the landing page has a section for unique text or selling points, more often than not it’s simply a matter of putting your text in.  Usually, after these quick edits you can save the page and upload it and it’s ready to send traffic to.

By going outside the norm and using landing pages or banners that you create yourself or purchase, will give your traffic something new and something they haven’t seen before which increases curiosity and click through rates.

How to Optimize Email Opt-in Pages

Making email opt-in pages more effective is most important yet all too often overlooked and forgotten task of a company’s marketing agent whose job is to increase sales through email contacts. Design and presentation of the opt-in pages determines the quality of email lists and the rate of company growth in addition to meeting or raising subscriber’s expectations. All of these in turn lend a helping hand to the desired email performance.

The first and foremost step toward maximizing the opt-in pages is to entice and persuade recipients of the emails to complete and submit them. The second step is the task of designing the Opt-in Page.

Drawing visitors into the company’s website is an important goal but once there, visitors should be persuaded to sign up by going to the opt-in page. The path to that page, therefore, must attract attention to itself by being clearly and attractively visible and links to the opt-in page should appear on the Home page as well as on all the other pages on the company’s website.

The website should offer an easy and friendly environment to its visitors by displaying promotional boxes as side bars, plainly announcing the existence of its e-newsletter, links to navigation areas should be legible and apparent and the language used on the website must be known and understood by the general public and, of course, the average visitor.

Assuming that there is enough space for it, promoting the most recent e-newsletter along with its link on the company’s website Home page is a good idea. An effectively functional website contains a “Knowledge and Resource Center” where articles and back issues of e-newsletters are kept in chronological order for visitors to browse through at will. The link to the opt-in page should be included here as well.

Since the sole purpose of the opt-in page is to convert as many readers as it can into signed up subscribers, the design, structure and layout of the opt-in page should be similar to the Landing Page and it should radiate confidence, value and reliability. Links to sample e-newsletters should be included so that the interested readers will get an idea what they are signing up for. A small screenshot displaying the e-newsletter is not a must but it can most certainly help. A list of positive testimonials from other subscribers of the e-newsletter in a pull-down format could prove to be a beneficial selling point.

There is no such thing as a free lunch nowadays. Thus it is important to remember that when readers finally decide to subscribe and relinquish their well-guarded email addresses, they expect something of at least equal value in exchange. This is the key reason for displaying images, providing samples and reader testimonials of the e-newsletter right on the opt-in page. “Email only special deals” are nice added bonuses that will be appreciated by subscribers and goes a long way toward promoting the company and its products. Such “email only” offers can also increase the number of subscribers which in turn will increase sales.

A brief statement or disclaimer must be visibly displayed near the “Submit” or “Send” button along with a link to the company’s detailed privacy policy that will fully explain, among other important points, the e-newsletter frequency, format and content. In addition, a confirming and welcoming email must be issued as soon as an opt-in page is submitted.

In designing and structuring the opt-in page, it is crucially important that the form does not require too much personal information, yet it is equally important that it asks for as much information as is needed for the company’s present as well as future marketing and sales strategies. It is advisable to distinguish between mandatory information and optional information and mark those distinctions beside every field by using different colors, asterisk or actually spelling it out.

A programmed script should be included within the opt-in page to check for syntax errors. Furthermore, to reduce possibilities of making typing errors while entering the email address, two consecutive but separate fields should be provided. The minimum required fields should include first name, last name, email address (twice) and format preference, while the optional fields could ask for secondary email addresses (also entered in two consecutive but separate fields) and various demographic details.

Wordpress Squeeze Page Theme

how to create a Squeeze Page Theme in a wordpress theme?

I want to create a squeeze page on my wordpress blog www.mysite.com, but I don’t want to use any theme for the squeeze page.

I think you just answered your own question. If you want to make a page “in a wordpress theme”, you will be bound by the WordPress software. Any page or post you create will automatically inherit the selected theme. You could go with a really minimalistic theme, but then your entire site would be minimalistic.

However, here’s something you can do. I do this all the time. Build your squeeze page as a standalone page outside of the WordPress realm. Then get yourself a redirect plugin. I use Quick Post/Page Redirect. It creates a widget on the edit page for both posts and pages. Then just set up the redirect to point to your squeeze page. That way it gives the appearance that it’s a post or page in your blog, but clicking on the post or page title actually redirects you to the squeeze page, where ever you decide to put it.

It sounds as if you might be an internet marketer. You can easily make your own themes with a WordPress theme builder. I’ve been doing my own themes since last summer and I’ll never go back to making an HTML site.

8 Step Formula For Creating Landing Pages That Produce Results

When a potential customer clicks on a link on the search engine result page or a pay per click advertisement, the Landing Page that appears can make or break your online business. If you are not careful in designing your landing page, you will lose potential buyers. How do you make your landing page relevant to what the searchers want and make it convincing for them to take an action?

By following the eight simple techniques discussed in this article, you will be able to create landing pages that produce results. So, next time before you start dipping into your pocket for a pay per click ad campaign, make sure that your landing pages are ready to make the conversion possible.

1. Create lots of landing pages and group them into two distinct groups. In fact create landing pages for each keyword you are targeting. Each landing page should be focused on one keyword only. Categorize your landing pages into two groups. One group is for people who are doing their research on a product before making a decision to buy the product and the other group is for people who are ready to buy the product.

The research related landing pages should be full of quality contents, reviews, comparison of different brands, etc. However, if the buyer is already made up her mind make it easy for her to go directly to the landing page that is ready to take orders.

2. Make your landing page simple. Simplicity rules in the web. Don’t assume anything. Something that is obvious to you, is not so obvious to your visitors. Your visitors are busy. They don’t have time to figure it out. If they can’t find what they are looking for, they will leave instantly.

Every landing page should serve one and one purpose only. Determine the purpose of the landing page, design it accordingly. Make it simple to navigate. Use heading and subheadings to increase the effectiveness of your contents. Use bold texts, colors, and larger fonts to highlight the benefits of your products. Use bulleted items and white spaces to make your contents easy to read.

Hire a professional to design the page. Web page design has changed considerable over the years. Just because you know HTML tags, it does not mean you can design a good page. Get your copy proof read by others for spelling and grammatical mistakes.  You can hire a professional by participating in various web masters’ forums.

3. Only obtain the most  relevant information from visitors. If you are collecting leads by offering free reports or product demo, get only the names and email addresses of your visitors. Don’t ask for their grand ma’s last name. Make it quick for the visitors before they decide to bail out and leave your site and never come back again.

Once you establish yourself as a trusted online business, you can collect more information for refining your marketing strategy. Even if you are a trusted name, for new users only collect  information that you absolutely need for follow ups.

4. Have plenty of calls to action. A call to action is a must for every landing page. You want users to do some thing once they start scanning your content. Don’t let users think “what next?” You want users to “Try it Now”, “Try it Free”, “Download Instantly”, “Click Here For a Free Sample”, etc.

Whatever is the call to action, you should have it in multiple places on the landing page because people don’t read the entire page. They scan the page and  read contents that are of particular interest to them. When they are reading the content, they should have the call to action in the vicinity.

5. Use multimedia strategically. Besides texts, pictures, videos and sounds are becoming popular in landing pages. Don’t start playing music as soon as a visitor lands on you page. Let the users control their experience. Use relevant pictures only. A pictures that is not related to your landing page is a distraction.

If you are using videos for product demo, you can create separate YouTube channels for all your videos and embed those videos in your landing pages. Don’t just drop video files in your web server and put links to the files.

6. Make your landing page trustworthy and secured. Every landing page should have links to contact information, terms of service and a privacy disclosure. Provide multiple ways to contact you. Use at least email, instant messages, and twitter for communication channels. If possible, also  provide a phone number.

You privacy policy should clearly state what you are going to do and not going to do with the information you collect from your visitors and how you are using cookies that you place on the users computers. Use secured socket layers (SSL) for all credit card transactions and use an SSL logo as a reminder to visitors that your site is secured.

7. Provide feedback to your visitors after they respond to your call to action. After you have successfully converted a lead, take your visitors to a confirmation page. List every thing they expect to receive because of their action.

Provide links for downloading your products. Thank them for their action. At this stage you can ask for more information about them. You can ask them to participate in surveys, read your blog posts or subscribe to you newsletter for more information related to the product they just purchased.

8. Test different version of your landing page using Google Website Optimizer. The optimizer is a free tool you can use to test the effectiveness of different Landing Page Designs and contents. You can try different combination of contents to find out a design that converts the most. As you increase the conversion rate, you also improve visitor satisfaction and convert your one time visitors to repeat visitors.

Make Landing Pages Work for You

Making Landing Pages Work for You

I never forget the first time I mention a landing page to client. Their first response is “a what?”. I ask where their current ads are pointing to, and I usually get the same response, the home page. In fact, nearly all of the SEM clients I’ve dealt with have started out with google ads pointed right at their homepage. While this might make perfect sense at the time, in most cases it’s a poor choice. I’ll explain why.

What is a Landing Page?

The first question you might have is simple to answer. A landing page is a page specially designed to send advertising traffic to. They are individual ads created just for the targeted customer. Rather than dump them directly to the homepage, you send them a targeted page that is meant to sell them a specific service or product.

Why do I need Landing Pages?

The reason you need landing pages is because you want to sell something. It’s all about targeting, and the right landing page targets your service or product. If you sell 100 different products, does it make sense to send all your potential clients to the homepage, and expect them to find what they want? You want to create specific ads for a specific product or service, then target that landing page for it, so you cut out a lot of confusion and give the visitor what they’re looking for.

What makes a good landing page?

Here are some things that make a good landing page. A combination of all of these will help your conversions in a major way.

1. Make it targeted. – Make sure your landing page is set to talk about a specific niche, product or service. Dont try to put all your eggs in one basket. Make a page for each thing you’re trying to sell, and don’t tie them together. Make sure the information on the page matches what you put in your ad.

2. Keep it simple – The more cluttered your page is, and the more text there is, the less likely someone will stay on the page. Don’t make it so simple that it doesn’t catch attention, but make it as simple as you can. The less there is to read, the better off you are.

3. Make it flashy – This is the one I have the hardest time talking people into. Make your colors vivid, and make the product photos stand out. You know those really cheesy pages you see sometimes with bright red fonts and huge headlines? They are prevalent for a reason.

4. Make the call to action clear – Make sure there is no way to miss the link you want them to click. If you want them to click through and read something, or buy something, you have to make it big, and clear. “Click here to purchase now” is a good one, or “click here to learn more”. Make sure it’s clear, large and noticeable.

5. Make the buttons bigger. – Studies have shown that action buttons are more effective when they are larger. While this might look a little tacky, the bigger the button, the better the clicks. Try not to make it too large, but don’t hide it either.

6. Show off your product – When people see something in action, they’re more likely to buy it. Studies have shown that if you show something to someone, they are more likely to buy, and the web is no different.

7. Have a clear message – This is a lot like #1 and 4, but make sure your message is clear. Your message should be: buy my product or service because you need it.

8. Talk about the customer, not your company. – Everyone loves to talk about themselves. Your customers are no different. Always replace phrases talking about “us” or “our company” with phrases that contain “you” and “your company” . Make it feel like it’s directed at them.

9. Keep branding in mind – While you want to keep it simple and targeted, don’ t forget branding. 90% or more of your visitors wont be buying anything, but make sure they see your company name and logo. If they see it enough, it will stick, and maybe they’ll come looking for you later.

10. Test everything – Make sure and test your landing pages. Test views vs clicks, conversions and anything else you can within your means. Using google analytics is a good way to test conversion goals, and work towards that.

Using this information, you should be able to create decent landing pages and toy with them. Remember, this is a process that requires a lot of testing and tuning, and it’s by no means a one time thing. It’s an ongoing process. Just by creating a few good landing pages, you could be getting a lot more bang for your advertising buck.

Making $100 – $200 With Online Polls and CPA – Part I

This is a simple method developed by Stephen Lean, on how you could be making an extra $100 to $200 dollars a day doing on-line polls and using CPA networks.

I am go to break this up into steps in order to keep it straight and to the point so that even a novice at on-line marketing will be able to do this easily.

There are only 5 steps to making this happen for you. Surely that is worth looking into just to see what it is all about.

Step 1: Get Poll Ideas

Step 2: Sign Up As An Affiliate In A Few CPA Networks

Step 3: Run An Ad In Google Adwords

Step 4: Build A Landing Page

Step 5: Keyword Selection

Step 1: Getting Poll Ideas. Go to Yahoo Buzz Index. It shows the top searches in yahoo daily.

Look for a popular events: sporting events, political scandals, celebrities

Poll on the people involved in the event. Not the event!

For example, an event like the NBA finals and ask “What do you think of the NBA finals this year?”

Be more specific ask something like, “Who do you think will be the MVP this year K. Bryant or D. Wade?”, let them state their case for either.

People will vote if emotionally attached to your poll

Let´s move on to step 2 on how to make $100 a day with on-line polls and CPA.

Sign up in CPA networks as an affiliate. Pick an email submit offer to promote.

You get paid between $0.50 to $1.50 depending on the offer.

It´s´s easy and it works!

There are many sites like this on line. Eg.

Azoogle

Affiliate.com

fluxads

Neverblues

XY7

These are just a few available out there.

Trust me it doesn´t get any easier than this.

Step 3.) You run an ad in Google AdWords

That´s´s it for #3

Steven Lean of http://cpa-coaching.com suggest that you start your bids at $0.20 to get traffic and then gradually bid down to $0.10 – $0.07 over a 48 hour period.

I would say start bidding at $0.22.

Why?

Because, most people bid on Google, (up to 98%), in numbers ending in zero or five.

Example: .20, .25, .30,…

See what I mean?

There are some really smart people who bid in numbers ending in ones or sixes. Beating out the ones that bid in numbers ending with zeros and fives.

So for a couple of pennies more you beat all the competition.

Now you see how easy it is to make money on the internet with on-line polls and CPA networks.

Check out part II of this article for the final details on how to make $100 – $200 a day with on-line polls and CPA

Find Ideas Here to Promote Your CPA Offers

Now that you’ve become a member of several CPA networks, you need to decide how you will direct traffic to your affaffiliate site, cpa offers, free offers, affiliate site flashed, affiliate offersiliate site in order to promote the merchant’s free offers. One factor in your decision will be your advertising budget; how much are you willing and able to pay for advertising? If you have some money to spend, then you can sign up for pay-per-click search engines such as Google and Yahoo. You register in the site, usually for free, and your ads appear on the results page in response to a search for specific keywords. You pay the host site every time a user clicks on the ad and is redirected to your affiliate site.

In order for pay-per-click to be effective for you, you need to find good keywords to promote the CPA’s offers. You can do this using keyword tools that would provide you with a list of targeted search terms. Once you’ve identified your keywords, you can compose the headline that will appear on the search engine’s results page.

On the other hand, if your budget is limited, you can resort to free advertising methods. For example, you can upload videos to YouTube with a quick link to the affiliate site flashed at the end. Of course, this would work only if you are able to create good quality videos, although a power point presentation set to music would be enough if it had some content of value in it. You also need to tag the videos properly by putting your keywords in the description box; these tags will enable the video to appear on search engine rankings.

If videos are not your thing, you can write articles and submit them to article directories with a link to your affiliate site at the end. Again, you have to make sure that the articles are well-written, interesting and include targeted keywords in the body and title so they would have a high position in search engines.

A third method that will not cost you anything is posting answers on sites like Yahoo Answers. For example, if you have an offer for a free trial of a tooth whitening product and a user posts a question about how to get rid of yellow teeth, you can post an answer that includes a link to your affiliate site as a reference.  Of course, if you do this your site should have useful content like articles and videos to avoid being branded as a spammer.

Related to this last method is joining message forums related to the niche of your free offer. You will most likely have to prepare a landing page, however, since many forums would allow links only to websites and not directly to affiliate offers.

There are many more ideas for promoting CPA offers; I’m sure you can come up with more than a few. But it never hurts to listen to the experiences of experts such as Alex Goad and Saj P, who have both successfully made fortunes on the Internet. What Do With a Poor Adwords Quality Score

You’ve read the Adwords Strategy Guide and Advanced Guide. You have implemented all the techniques to get to a Good Quality Score.  But, Adwords has still assigned you a Poor Quality Score.  What do you do?  The following list of items are the things you want to check to raise that poor Quality Score.

(1) What is Adwords saying is wrong?

Adwords provides some diagnostic information when they assign a poor Quality Score.  Take a look inside Adwords and see why Adwords gave you the poor score.  When you know what Google thinks is wrong, you can attack the problem.  Adwords reports on three categories of problems.

(a) Keyword relevance
Generally this means you have a poor CTR.  More on how to fix it in a moment.

(b) Landing Page
This means your Landing Page is not tailored to your keyword.  Create a unique landing page for your keyword and optimize the page for it.

(c) Landing Page Load Time
Your Landing Page was too slow.  Start removing images, javascripts, stylesheets and any other elements not directly related to your message.

(2) How is the CTR of the ad?

Once you begin to get traffic (impressions) of your ads, the CTR becomes a major factor in the quality score.  Google is letting the human consumers determine if your ad is relevant to their searches.  If the ad is relevant, human consumers click your ad and the CTR goes up.  If the human consumers don’t click your ad, the CTR goes down.  Google alters the quality score based on the CTR.  It’s a survival of the fittest ad when you begin to get impressions.

The rule is you must have a half percent CTR to maintain a Quality Score.  But, I recommend shooting for a 2% or 3% CTR.  If you don’t have a CTR of at least 0.5% you should do one of the following…

(a) Improve the sales copy of the ad.
This is crucial if you want to keep the keyword.  Your ad needs to be compelling enough to make consumer want to click it.  If you don’t have a 0.5% CTR your ad isn’t doing it’s job.

(b) Increase the max CPC bid.
You can increase the max CPC to get a higher ad position.  A higher CPC bid means higher ad position, more traffic, and (hopefully) more CTR.  After you have achieved a CTR of 2 or 3% for two weeks, you can start lowering you CPC bid because the CTR is likely boosting your Quality Score, and you can maintain the higher ad position without spending as much.

(c) Delete the keyword.
The Quality Score of your entire campaign can be damaged by poor performing keywords.  Delete them if you can’t keep the CTR above 0.5%.

(3) Revise your Landing Page.

Can you optimize the landing page more?  I assume you have the keyword in the page title, meta tags and heading tags.  Have you used it throughout your sales copy as well?  Adwords likes to see the keyword in the content.  Assuming you have read the Advanced Guide, you can still use PHP to dynamically insert the keyword just like you did for the page title and meta tags.

Google AdWords Strategy – Part 3: Other Google AdWords Strategies

3. Other Google AdWords Strategies

     Google AdWords Ad Positioning

Although the profit margin on the product or service offered is a large factor, tests have proved that the first ad position on the first page is, generally, not the most profitable. Yes, it gets the most clicks, but it’s often a spontaneous action by the surfer before studying the ad. Sometimes the surfer is merely browsing the subject and is not ready to buy (commonly known as “tyre-kickers”).

Tests show that the further down the page an ad is, or, occasionally, even on the second page, the greater is its conversion rate. The surfer has taken the time to read the ad carefully because he is ready to buy. Furthermore, the clicks are fewer; so, your overall pay-per-click bill is less than for a higher-positioned ad. The downside is that the click-through rate (CTR) of the lower-positioned ads is lower, which affects your Quality Score adversely and raises your cost per click.

A happy medium is to aim for positions 4 to 6 on Google’s first page. (You can use the “Show Estimated Ad Position” and “Estimated Avg CPC” columns in the on-line Google AdWords Keyword Tool to determine the cost-per-click to bid for each of of your exact match keyword phrases, and then you can set those bids accordingly. These figures can, however, be notoriously inaccurate. Always check your keyword phrases’ positions afterwards in the ‘Avg Pos’ column on the Ad Group’s ‘Keywords’ index tab or by testing with a search on the main keyword phrases.)

“Google Search” ads, “Content Network” ads, “Search Network”/”Search Partners” ads, “Placement” ads

You can specify different maximum bid amounts for these various types of advertising. Because the quality of their traffic tends to be lower, bids for the Content Network (”entire network” option) and Search Network (Search Partners) (see Tactics > Search Network) should be kept lower and be more tightly controlled than those for Google Search traffic and the Content Network (”Placement ads” option). In the early stages of a new Google AdWords campaign, it is advisable to go with only Google Search traffic and switch other options off, to help you to control costs. Once you’ve discovered the keywords that produce the highest return on investment (ROI), you can enable other options for those keywords to see what results they produce.

If you find that a Google Search traffic campaign is too competitive, don’t just abandon Google AdWords altogether; try a Content Network Placement ad (see Tactics > Placement Ads), bidding either CPC or CPM (q.v.).

    Testing and Tracking

    Ad Variations

Despite what you may think of your copywriting prowess, you will not write the perfect ad at the first attempt. You may need ten attempts before you find the best formula. Although you may hazard a reasonable guess at the advertisement text that would attract visitors, the ONLY way to KNOW what ad text achieves the highest click-through rate (CTR) is split-test two ads simultaneously.

Although changing just a single word can make a difference, do not split-test two ads that resemble each other that closely; Split-test two radically different ads. (Switch off Google’s option to show the better-performing ad more often than the other, as that would distort the test results.) After between 20 and 50 clicks it should become apparent which of the two ads is out-performing the other. Then replace the inferior ad with another and split-test again. Repeat this process again and again, each time reducing the textual differences between the two ads until you arrive at the one that performs best of all.

To track the click-through rate (CTR) of your ads, go to your Google AdWords campaign web page, click on the Campaign name; click on the Ad Group name; click the ‘Ad Variations’ index tab; check the ‘CTR’ column.

Always keep all the Ad Variations that you create, to check that you don’t repeat any inadvertently.

    Landing Pages

Split-test your landing pages in a similar way, to discover which style, layout, text, call to action, etc. achieves the highest conversion rate. To track the conversion rates of your web pages for various keywords, go to your Google AdWords campaign web page and click on the ‘Conversion Tracking’ item on the ‘Campaign Management’ index tab.

Always save all the landing pages that you create, to check that you don’t repeat any inadvertently.

    Keywords

After a new campaign has been running for about a month, check the click-through rate (CTR) of all the keyword phrases in each Ad Group on its ‘Keywords’ index tab. Click the ‘CTR’ column header to sort the keyword phrases, mark the checkbox of all keyword phrases with a CTR of less than 0.5% and either ‘Pause’ or ‘Delete’ them. (If you have many keywords, it’d probably be quicker to do this in your specialist AdWords software tool and upload the keyword list to your Google AdWords campaign again.)

0.5% is considered the benchmark of a poorly performing keyword. Such keywords cause your ad to be displayed but, for some reason, the people using the keyword in their search terms don’t connect it mentally with your ad, and don’t click on it. If several keywords have a low click-through rate (CTR), the overall click-through rate (CTR) of your whole Ad Group is reduced and its Quality Score will be affected adversely. Eventually, this Ad Group’s lower Quality Score will also affect the Quality Score of your entire Google AdWords campaign.

This check should be performed weekly thereafter.

If you really want to use those poorly performing keywords, remove them from the Ad Group and create a new Ad Group for them, or even a new campaign, so that they don’t affect your overall Quality Score.

    The Bottom Line

Great importance is attached to the click-through rate (CTR), but, to put it in perspective, it is only a means to an end. A high click-through rate (CTR) does not make you a millionaire in itself; It’s revenue that counts. Your revenue is determined by the successful interaction between keywords, Ad Variation and landing page, all three working in harmony together.

    Maximum CPC Bid

Don’t be afraid to bid higher than necessary for keywords in a new Google AdWords campaign during the first few days. This will establish your campaign with Google and, as your click-through rate (CTR) rises, your maximum CPC bid amount to achieve the same ad position will fall dramatically. Then you lower your bids and check again the next day. Repeat this process until your bids are minimized. You do this for all the keyword phrases in the Ad Group. If there are too many keywords to deal with manually, invest in specialist software to calculate the bids for you.

      CPC or CPM?

Google ‘Content Network’ advertising (see Tactics > Content Network) gives you the option to specify your keywords’ maximum bids as cost-per-click (CPC) or cost-per-thousand-impressions (CPM) (”M” is the Roman numeral for 1,000, “mille” in Latin). CPM can be useful if the Quality Score is low or the cost per click (CPC) is high. If you opt to pay for impressions rather than for clicks, Google couldn’t care less about Quality Score or click-through rate (CTR) or even relevance; You simply pay each time your ad appears. Of course, it’s still in your interest to ensure that you follow the advice about relevance already given.

It’s your responsibility to track the performance of your CPM ads, because Google doesn’t do it for you. Obviously, you won’t want to keep paying for ads that don’t convert. Moreover, you’ll still have to bid high enough to get your ad to be displayed in the desired position within an ad unit on an AdSense publisher’s web page, or even at all, and that cost could be quite high on a good-quality, popular web site that you choose for a ‘Placement’ ad (see Tactics > Placement Ads).

     Keywords

Unless you have a six-figure annual budget and would be happy with a mere 10% return on investment (ROI), don’t bother bidding for popular 1-word keywords, such as “mortgage”. The competition for most single-word keywords is fierce, unless the niche is very esoteric. Moreover, searches on single words are made most frequently by people who are simply not ready to spend their money; they are merely investigating the market, gathering information; in other words, they are “tyre-kickers”. 1-word keywords would probably bankrupt you very quickly.

2-word keywords are a better bet, but they can still command a high cost per click in competitive markets, surfers who search on them may still not be ready to buy, although they’re getting there.

Keyword phrases of three words and up are known as “long-tail” keywords. (Note that the word “keyword” in pay-per-click advertising can mean a phrase of more than one actual word, e.g., “New York”. A “keyword phrase” consists of more than one “keyword”.)

3-word keyword phrases have the highest conversion rate, according to tests. People who type three words as a search term have usually done their investigations, know exactly what they want, and are now ready to buy.

4-word keyword phrases fare slightly less well, perhaps because the searcher may indeed be ready to buy, but is comparing prices for a very specific item, or is doing some academic research.

Don’t understimate the power of negative keywords! If you sell tulips, you don’t want your ad to appear when someone searches on the term “grow tulips”. Although they may not click on your ad, it’d be an unnecessary impression, and its click-through rate (CTR) would suffer. Specify “grow” as a negative keyword. (Of course, if your Ad Group contains only exact match keyword phrases, there’s no point in specifying negative keywords.)

     Landing Page

Relevance is covered above, and is by far the most important attribute of a landing page. Here is some advice about other ways to encourage Google to enhance your Ad Group’s Quality Score.

Google values “real” web sites more highly than mere single-page “mini-sites”. The robot checks for links to other web pages, particularly a ’site map’ page and ‘privacy policy’ and ‘contact us’ pages. A ‘terms of use’ and an ‘about us’ page may also help. Hyphenate these page names as the file names, e.g., ‘privacy-policy.html’. Place the links to these pages at the very bottom of your landing page, in the footer, using as small a font as a human would consider reasonable. You want to reduce the risk as much as possible that your visitor will click away from your landing page.

Minimize the landing page’s load time. It is believed that Google uses this as an element in its Quality Score algorithm. Keep images and JavaScript to a minimum. They weigh the page down. (Google cannot follow JavaScript links anyway.)

     How to Attract Visitors

What makes a person click on your ad instead of someone else’s? The answer is the same as to the question why a person clicks the ‘Buy’ button on your sales page: good copywriting. That’s a separate subject, but, suffice it to say here that your ad must be not only relevant, but also compelling. Imagine that you are the searcher, looking to buy a product or service like yours. Look at other ads offering something similar. What attracts you to one and not another? Ask your friends and colleagues what they think.

You have only a 25-character headline and two description lines of 35 characters each. Don’t squander them on waffling about your company. The consumer couldn’t care less about you or your company. The consumer has a problem to be solved, a need to be satisfied, a desire to be fulfilled. So, mention the problem, the need, the desire. And, most important, tell the consumer that the solution, what he needs, what he wants is only a click away. Tell him to “Get Help Now” or to “Find It Here”. That’s the ‘call to action’.

Easy Web Site Design Tips – How to Simply Create a Targeted Landing Page With Wordpress

When working with the Wordpress blog a new content is created easily – it is like creating a simple Word document. You can add your formatting, fonts, tables, etc. It is easy because Wordpress is designed to manage content simply. Your new page or post in a blog is nicely put inside a Wordpress theme, with all the graphics.

However, from time to time we need to create a simple landing page, without Wordpress features like a header, footer, sidebar, etc. It is when we need to create a simple landing page, or Squeeze Page to capture leads, or create a landing page for our PPC AdWords campaign.

In this situation, we need a simple, clean landing page with one purpose only – to get a lead or a sale.

In this case, the standard Wordpress blog page is not sufficient, because it usually provides a lot of distractions for users. There are many other links the users can click, thus not having one “line of thought” in front of their eyes. In this case, you can use a Wordpress custom page template.

Wordpress custom page template is not very well known, yet powerful Wordpress feature. It allows you to integrate any web page into your site with no problems. You can basically make any Wordpress page look exactly as you want. You can use any.html file as a template. Simply design your desired squeeze page and use it as a template for your blog page.

Some Wordpress themes even provide these simple page templates. They have an additional page template for this purpose. This page template has no sidebars, headers, anything. You can design your landing page as you wish, simply by adding a new Wordpress page.

When editing or creating a new Wordpress page the page template can be changed easily. Look at the right sidebar – there is a “Template” combo box. Here you can select a “Default Template” or a template without sidebars for a landing page (if supported by the current Wordpress theme). When editing a Wordpress page using ‘clean’ page template, remember that you have to add headers and footers manually where needed.

Remember to add links from this new page to your home blog page, as well as important links to your privacy policy or contact pages, etc.

If the Wordpress theme doesn’t have the page template usable for the squeeze page, you can easily create your own page template. However, do not change the current theme manually. Just use the Wordpress custom page template. The custom page template is just any regular HTML file, which extension is changed to.php and the template header is inserted at the beginning of the page.

The header is simply this piece of code (change your template name):

Template Name: Your Template Name

This php file is then uploaded to the current theme directory (e.g. “/wp-content/themes/default/”).

Note, that this page can be used only with the theme where it was uploaded. If you want to use it with another theme, you must upload this page to that theme directory.

HTML Email Templates: How to Gain Sales and Subscribers

In bulk email marketing, there are actually two real objectives that every marketer has – getting a sale and getting the ground set for sustaining that level of sales. This translates into selling products and ensuring that you have a continuous stream of new subscribers that will be interested in your product so that they will buy from you. As one can imaging, both are arduous tasks. There are sub-objectives as well like reducing costs and to that end many bulk email marketing executives will start using free HTML email templates as well. But you must be wondering how can a template help fulfill the two main objectives?

To gain sales in bulk email marketing, it is not enough to just have a good product – that is something that nearly all your competition will have. Your sales levels can only improve by being able to get the offer ready in time and communicating it before the rest of world gets to your prospects. To this effect, templates can be of immense help because they reduce the production time of creating an email offer and communicating it. You could just copy and paste text from an approved document and put it in a template and send it out.

On the other side of the coin is getting new subscribers. This is not really one of those things that free HTML email templates can help you out with but there is much to be said about the impression that a really good HTML can have on a prospective recipient. Imagine that you have sent out a bulk HTML email to your users. One of the users believes that the offer is so good that all of his or her friends should know about it. Here, any number of people could end up getting your bulk email as a sheer bonus. Should your email make a good impression, there is no reason to believe that the bonus people would not subscribe.

Another part of gaining sales also has to do with another kind of HTML template and that is the template of your landing page. While your HTML email might have done the trick with the customer, and the customer clicks on a “buy” link and ends up on your landing page, bad and unfriendly design can kill the deal. For this reason, ensure that the path to checkout is completely intuitive.

Free HTML email template usage, or even paid template usage, contribute in their own small way of ensuring that you are able to try and fulfill your business objectives. A word of caution is required here, as you must remember that your email template is usually never the fundamental reason for your mailing campaign to go wrong or sales to not register. For this reason, the objective of mailing should be judge by open rates, clicks, and bounce backs, as these are the reporting and tracking metrics that can only be justifiably attributed to email marketing.

The Usability of Website and Search Engine Optimization

My focus is on how website usability goes hand in hand with good SEO. Usability science, or human factors, pursues the quest for human-computer interface designs that are easy to use. While Usability Day is about technology as a whole, and how that technology makes our lives easier, this article will turn its attention to website usability, and how it can be important in search engine optimization.

Website usability deals with ease of navigation, how colors work together to enhance a user experience without hurting the eyes, the size of fonts, and design. But some of the concepts of website usability have a direct effect on how search engines crawl your website, and index it accordingly.

“Memory is part of usability. That’s why navigation is such a pain in the neck to work out and make usable for everybody who will use your web site. There are ads, images, blinking thingy’s distracting your eyes, and your mind is going everywhere at once”.

Usability Testing
Web site usability focuses on what happens after users arrive on a Web site. When usability professionals perform formative tests on Web page prototypes, the initial assumption is users have already landed on a specific page. Usability professionals observe what people do once they arrive on that page. Do they take the desired call to action? Do they understand what page they’re viewing? The focus of formative usability testing is to create a user-friendly interface. It isn’t how to encourage people to visit your Web site. That responsibility is usually relegated to the marketing department.

Search Engine Optimization:
Search engine optimization (SEO) is a set of methods aimed at improving the ranking of a website in search engine listings, and could be considered a subset of search engine marketing. The term SEO also refers to “search engine optimizers,” an industry of consultants who carry out optimization projects on behalf of clients’ sites.

It is the process of analyzing and optimizing your web site’s design in order to ensure its indexing and increase its positioning in search engines.
The goal of this analysis and optimization is to make your web site and its content more attractive, relevant and visible to search engines and web searchers.
It would be terrible to have a beautifully designed web site with excellent written content, yet receive little traffic simply because your site cannot be easily found, if at all, by using a major search engine.
We will provide you with our expert advice on your site’s architecture in order to make it search engine friendly.
A higher search ranking is what many website owners dream of. What they don’t realise is that by optimising their site for the search engines, if done correctly, they can also optimise it for their site visitors.
Ultimately this means more people finding your website and increased sales and lead generation. But are search engine optimization and usability compatible? Aren’t there trades-offs that need to be made between giving search engines what they want and giving people what they want? Read on and find out.

This Earth-Day-style event, focused on easy-to-use technology, currently involves plans in more than 70 cities in 30 countries. Online headquarters of the international day, says, “World Usability Day promotes the value of usability engineering, user-centered design, and every user’s responsibility to ask for things that work better. The Usability Professionals’ Association is doing that by encouraging, organizing, and sponsoring 36 hours of activities at the local level around the globe.

Usability and Search Engine Promotion

Tail Wagging and Search Marketing

Is the tail wagging your dog? In the online business world, Social Media is allowing the consumer to effect how business approaches marketing. By sharing opinions about their customer experience they are having an influence by speaking their mind and voting their preferences.

As more consumers become social media users, website marketers need to understand how to react and apply this input into the promotion process. The goal being not only to promote our Search Engine Placement Services but also to deliver to the end user what they have come to expect from their website experience.

In the book “User Driven Change” by my friend Carlos del Rio, and Jeff Noethen, it discusses Usability Testing. Specifically as it applies to changes made to a website. Using prototypes of designs and testing them with customers before putting the changes online.

If your website is marketing a service you want the end result of the person visiting to be some type of action, which can be called a conversion or completion of the goal of having the website in the first place.

Make sure your goal or conversion is well defined so that you can lead a visitor to the end result you want them to take in a clear easy to follow path. Can they find your content easily? Are they staying engaged or bouncing off a page quickly?

Tracking how a visitor comes to your site, how long they stay how many pages they visit can give you an understanding of how your website is or is not answering the expectations of the visitor.

* Flow: How difficult is it for users to navigate through your site the first time they visit?

* Ease Of Use: Is there any part of the design that is frustrating visitors? Is there any roadblocks between the customer and the result you are trying to lead them to?

* Recognition: Is the navigation through the website where the visitor expects it to be? Are they finding the information that answers the query they used to enter your site?

* Errors: How many errors do users make, how severe are these errors, and how easily can they recover from the errors? If you are having them fill out a form and they make a mistake, can they back out of the mistake without losing everything?

* Satisfaction: How pleasant is it to use the design?

Analyzing these aspects of your web page design help you break out and deal with the problem areas. You have to identify your target market and watch for changes in the user experience over time. Just because it works well when you first implement your web design, does not mean you’re finished. The way searchers find you changes, keywords used to look up your product change and the users in your target market can change as they get more adept just using the internet.

As you plan your presentation to your target audience, plan to incorporate these principles into your Search Engine Placement campaigns and into your Web site or Landing Pages.

Your ultimate goal is that your website visitor experience and your Search Engine Placement work together. It won’t help to go through the effort required to achieve High Search Engine Results if the searchers bounce right back off the site because it was not the clear answer they were looking for.

Just as an example, say you have a band named, “Black Rose,” and your website gives all kinds of information about your music, your albums and your tour information. Then your Search Engine Placement Services help you rank on the first page of search results for, “Black Rose.” How many gardeners do you think will click through to your site and stick around very long? None. As people have become more familiar with using the internet they have become very adept at backing off sites that didn’t match their search expectations.

Search Engine Placement without any regard to Website use and how it answers the search query is a waste of time and money. Many business people think they will automatically get the increase in business they desire just by ranking higher in search results. They don’t understand how closely tied a highly usable site are to Search Engine Placement Services.

If your website has the content people are looking for, you will be more likely to get the conversions you want and people will want to link to that content. This is link building at its most basic.

What’s good for the human visitor will also be good for the search engines. Their goal is to also create a great user experience. Delivering visitors to a Website that builds on that experience will put you on good terms with search engines.

How to Build a Video Squeeze Page

A squeeze page is a landing web page on the Internet that is designed to encourage users to sign up for mailing lists or take advantage of a brand’s products or services. It is created to follow up other marketing strategies, so it doesn’t have exit links directing a user to somewhere else on the Web.

Originally, Squeeze Pages are text-based, offering success stories and other teasers that would get a consumer to arrive at a buying decision. These days, however, it is fast becoming a trend to incorporate videos into squeeze pages to make them more compelling and effective in appealing to the audience’s emotions.

Elements of a squeeze page

In essence, the same concepts are still intact. To create a video squeeze page, you need to have the following elements present:

• A compelling headline

• A rundown of what the consumer stands to gain by purchasing the product

• A call to action

The only difference is that a video serves to offer more details to the message that these elements want to convey. To create a video squeeze page, you will need an embeddable video player such as Flowplayer. Simply download the software from its website and you’ll find instructions on how you can embed your clips on your squeeze page.

Crafting a headline

Just like traditional text-based squeeze pages, you’re going to need a catchy headline for your video squeeze page to get your visitor to stick around and hit the play button. You want to arouse the curiosity of the viewer so you need to make your headline stand out. For one, you need to use huge block fonts. Great fonts for writing headlines include Tahoma, Georgia, and Impact.

The video content

The video content’s purpose is to include the second element of the traditional squeeze page. It presents the benefits that a user stands to gain by signing up for your mailing list, downloading your e-book, or buying your products. The good thing about video clips is that they can make it easier for you to sum up in a few minutes a sales pitch that could take pages to write.

To maintain the consumer’s attention, you want to keep the video clip short. Two to five minutes should suffice if you have a lot to say. It’s also a good idea to incorporate a human side to the video presentation, taping a real individual talking directly to your audience instead of using voiceovers or slide shows.

Call to action

Of course, a video squeeze page cannot be complete without a call to action or an opt-in box. Make sure to place the opt-in form directly below the video. You can include a call to action on the video presentation itself and follow it up with actual text right below the clip. You just need to tell the viewer what he should do next. Don’t assume that he knows what to do after viewing your video.

Easy Video Squeeze Page Basics That Bring Enormous Traffic To Your Page – #1 Guide That Works Always

Tired of all the Squeeze Page Templates and software generators out there?

Want to try something else that will make your page stand out and get every visitor to sign up?

No Internet marketer would say no to the above. After all every one wants a massive list of subscribers as a big opt in list increases the chances of making sales. Successful Internet marketers have built their lists over years, which run into a huge number.

To quickly get to the point, it is important to understand that squeeze pages or Landing Pages are used to generate leads or get visitors to sign up with their e-mail ids. So when you think of ways to make your pages work, don’t loose sight of this idea. Most marketers go astray here and this reflects in the design.

To get it all right, it is important to empathize or put yourself in the visitor’s shoes. When you do that, you will find out that most of them like neutral colors. Something that is alluring but that does not blind the eye. Most designers would recommend that you go for such colors on your page.

If you are in tune with recent happenings, you would observe that unlike earlier when templates did work, they are not converting so well now. The reason is, they have been used excessively and the visitor does not want to see same things packed differently.

The lesson here is to emphasize the need to be different. This difference in your page can be incorporated only by a qualified designer with several years of experience.

If you are already using a squeeze page but don’t have a video on it yet, then you running a race you are most certainly going to loose. A video is better than text because it makes comprehension easy. More can be said in less time.

A well made video that does not dilly dally will churn out good conversions. But making a video is not as easy as using a template. It requires you to know a good deal about shooting, handling camera, directing, doing the voice over and then the toughest part, editing.

If you have no clue about it then you would be wasting your precious time trying to learn. Instead leave it to the experts who can make you a list builder page while you do the sales.
