The best portfolios- neat and organized.
It can be bound or not, art work should be in sleeves, and MOUNTED (standard border is 3×3x3×3.5).
You should choose only your best work and one size for all of the work (typically 11×14 or 18×24). Keep it consistent, it should “flow” and show work in different stages (employers will look for consistency in skill and style, they also want to see how your ideas progress).
Choose pieces that fit the company or gallery that you are presenting them in. Let your work speak for itself, keep text to a minimum. If you need to, take along notes for the pieces of work to help with the review or any questions the employer/buyer might have.
My portfolio is 11×14 mounted (most of the time on black or neutral grey board), in clear sleeves, and unbound. My work is presented in a black (inside and out) archival box. People will carefully look through the work and handle it as they would a precious object. I hope this helps you along your way.

The structure of the landing page in general should be matching that of the banner, ad or link they clicked on to get them there. If a Victoria Secret’s Ad for lingerie shows up and you click on it, you will be transferred to a landing page with the exact image and structure of the ad.

The visuals

• Copy placement – Strategic use of copy and graphics will catch the visitor’s attention. Don’t muck up the page with large, distracting graphics. Use plenty of whitespace and place your message in the central portion of the page rather than placing information down the sides, where the focus can be lost quickly. Keep the copy short. The visitor expects a precise message, so don’t choke it up with tons of mindless prose.

• Beauty is in the eye -Use a consistent color palate. If you have advertising or banners that link visitors to your website, make sure the concept and color scheme match across the board. It’s also a great visual indicator for the visitor because they can easily identify that they’re still in the right place.

• Simplify – Remove any distracting elements like advertising banners, links, or additional blocks of information from the page and get down to the specific message.

The goal

Before you design the landing page, decide what the goal of the page will be. If you’re looking for newsletter subscribers, the goal will be to have the visitor enter their information and become a member of your mailing list.

Be a sleuth

Do your research. Keep your visitors in mind when building your landing page and tailor it to suit their needs. By narrowing your options and focusing on your visitor, you’ll stay on target.

Keep your focus

Keep the focus on you. You’ve dangled a large poster board over their head and pulled them in. Now that you’ve got them, don’t give your visitors a reason to wander.

Use a call to action

A call to action, such as ’subscribe now’ or ‘get this offer’ reminds the visitor why they are on your website. Place them toward the top of your page. For uses that want to click, it allows them to find it easily. For those who are still deciding, it’s a great reminder.

Many sites place the consultation form or contact form directly on the landing page, which may not be such a bad idea. Again, you need glaring calls to action. Don’t add several useless links on the page that will take the visitor back to your main site; rather include the links that will get them to actually purchase your product/service.

No, you don’t have to hire one to look like one. What’s the best way to come off like a professional? Create landing pages with no grammatical or spelling errors. I recently hit a website offering ‘discount holideys.’ As I clicked out of there, I pictured the four-star flea-bag motel by the swampland I might have booked if I stayed.

Reassure

People get leery when they’re asked for their personal data. If you’re asking for personal information, make sure you have a credible privacy policy to back you up.

Do you have a blog? If you’re an Internet Marketer, and you don’t have one, why not? Is it because you’re afraid that you can’t write? Is it because you’re afraid you don’t know how to set up a blog? Is it because you don’t think you have time for a blog? Well, you’re wrong on all three counts. You’re wrong!

Everyone interested in list building should be driving traffic to Squeeze Pages, and blogs are an incredibly easy way to do that. First, search engines love them, so if you start a blog and make an entry every day, you’ll soon get ranked highly, if you stick to a theme and use keywords in your posts that show the search engines: “This is what my blog is all about.” It doesn’t take very long, either. One of my blogs came out as a PR5, the first time it ever got page rank, and for those of you who don’t understand the significance, it’s great!

When Google appoints page rank, it depends on lots of factors. I don’t want to get into that now, but let’s just say that a PR5 will show up better in search results than a PR0, 1, 2, 3, or 4. And for that reason it will get more traffic. The goal is to get your blog into the first three pages of results, the first page being the most desirable, with the top spot as your bullseye. That position gets the most traffic of all.

But let’s adress those issues that are stopping you.

You think you can’t write:

Well, everyone can write and there are lots of good courses out there to help you learn to do that. Get one and study it. Then, set aside one hour a day to start writing. Don’t do another thing, except stare at the blank screen, until you get some words down, even if you’re only outlining an idea. If you make this a ritual, it might be hard for the first day or so, but eventually, you’ll train your brain to realize that “Doh! It’s 9 o’clock. I have to be writing.” If you can’t afford a whole hour to start, try half an hour or even just fifteen minutes. You’ll be amazed at how much you can get done, when you have that “special” time set aside. After you’ve been doing this a while, you’ll probably write a blog entry every day. It won’t happen at first, but it will happen.

You can also find interesting tidbit on the web, and put excerpts from this stuff on your blog, too. Just be sure you aren’t plagiarizing. If you want to post more than 10% of the total words in the work, then, get permission from the author first.

Or use an article from one of the directories because they are free to print, as long as you keep the author’s information intact. Use the work in its entirety, including the author’s resource box or bio box. Then add a paragraph of introduction to the piece and a closing paragraph and “wrap” the article with your own words.

But if you just are dead set against writing or you feel that you don’t have the time it takes, hire someone. You can find people on places like Elance.com and Craigslist.com who will do the writing for you. These are “ghostwriters,” who not only sell you the article, but they sell you all rights with it, as well. That means you can put your name in the byline, you can change the article as you see fit. You can sell it and keep the money. If you have the ability to pay, ghostwriting might be your solution.

You don’t know how to set up a blog:

Not many people do! But it’s not a problem. If you are hosting on a cPanel server, WordPress can be installed easily by a great installer program called Fantastico. Just go into your cPanel account, and click Fantastico. Then, a whole bunch of options will probably come up. One of them will be “install WordPress blog,” or something like that. You fill in a few blanks, and voila! You have your own blog. Editing the templates are another issue, and that may be a bit tricky for you, if you’re not familiar with HTML.

So, if you don’t know how to do these technical details, hire someone to do it for you. You can find them online, too, at places like RentaCoder.com. Tell them what you want done and pay them to do it for you.

You don’t have time for a blog:

You don’t have time NOT to have a blog. Blogs are great for many reasons. First, as mentioned above search engines love them. By placing a link to your main site on your blog, you’re getting a one-way link back to your site, too. That’s also great for search engine optimization because search engines look at links like votes. The more one-way votes you have, the higher your site will rank. But the best thing about a blog is the traffic you’ll get. Sign up for some Web2.0 sites, like StumbleUpon, Del.icio.us, and Spicy Page, and book mark your posts there, too. You’ll get tons of traffic!

The whole thing is that having a Squeeze Page alone won’t help you one bit, if nobody knows it exists. Of the bazillion web pages out there, you need to take action to see that your page is noticed. You need traffic. Blogs are great for traffic! Set up a blog and watch your traffic grow, almost overnight.

I have just build and uploaded my first website and I am trying to get traffic to come there. I am a start up company, starting out on the web. I brought a Lynda.com training video on search engine optimization, It is a fine video but it seems to be old it was produced it seems from what the instructor talks about and websites he goes to, I would say it was produced in 2005, maybe early 2006. I have tried to find tutorials and free tools on line but the amount of information on SEO and SEM is overwhelming. Inside Google Adwords – Page Load Time

Adwords began calculating Quality Scores for ads for each consumer search in September 2008.  Part of the new calculation is page load time.  You’ll learn What is page load time, how does it affect your Quality Score and what can you do to improve it.

What does page load time mean?

Page load time is the time it takes for your page to render after it is requested.  The life cycle of a page is straight forward.

1) The request for the page is made

2) The server will performing any server side processing, like dynamically generating content or accessing a database.  When the page is completely constructed, it will proceed to the next step.  NOTE:  Static HTML pages do not have server side rendering, only PHP, JSP or ASP.NET pages have server side processing.

3) The server begins transmitting the response over the internet

4) The client computer receives the response

5) The client begins rendering the response in a browser window.  Additional requests are made for flash scripts, graphics and javascript.

6) When the page is completely rendered, and all other requests are complete, the page has loaded.

Adwords must really be measuring the time from the request until the response is read.  I doubt Google can actually be attempting to time to render the page n the client, and make the child request for graphics and so forth.  Google would have to add some javascript code to the page in order to know when the client side rendering was complete.  I seriously doubt they would do this.

How does it affect your Quality Score?

Google has this to say about why it considers page load time.

“Two reasons: First, users have the best experience when they don’t have to wait a long time for Landing Pages to load. Interstitial pages, multiple redirects, excessively slow servers, and other things that can increase load times only keep users from getting what they want: information about your business. Second, users are more likely to abandon landing pages that load slowly, which can hurt your conversion rate.”

Based on this paragraph it seems Google is trying to crack down Advertisers using server side redirects and interstitial/ad pages.  A server side redirect would be when the destination url is requested, the server side scripting language redirects the request to another url. This really performs two request, and thus increases the page load time.  An interstitial page is an advertisement page that is shown (briefly) before the content, and may be achieved with a redirect.

It also seems that Google is saying if your page takes to much to respond, it’s likely doing something sneaky.

What can you do to improve your page load time?

1) Optimize your server side scripting
If you do use PHP, JSP or ASP.NET, make sure your server side code is optimized.  This is especially true when using a database.  You need to optimize both your database, and your code for speed.

2) Get dedicated web hosting
Most cheap web hosting happens on a shared server.  That means that many websites from many website authors are all on the same server.  All of these websites compete for server resources, like bandwidth and memory.  Heavy traffic to some other website on a shared server can slow your page load time.  A dedicated server is one where only your website(s) resides at.  It’s more expensive, but you get dedicated resources.

3) Compress the size of your page
A web page is really just a file.  That file must be transmitted from your server to the client computer over the internet.  If you can decrease the size of the file, the file will transmit faster.  You can compress your pages by removing whitespace.  You can remove any unncessary HTML tags.  You can use relative urls instead of absolute urls.  Do anything to decrease the size for the file.

4) Lose the Flash Animation
Flash animation is generally rendered on the client side, so it may not factor into the Page Load time.  But then again it may.  Either way, Flash animation tends to be slow, so get rid of it for the sake of your customers.  Sure it looks great, but you can’t afford to lose sales because nobody waits around for the Flash animation load.

5) Strip out unnecessary elements from the page
Again, elements rendering on the client may not affect the page load time.  Then again they just might.  Remove any unnecessary graphics or images.  These take a long time to load.  Minimize javascript or CSS includes.  Additional requests need to made for these files, so keep it to a minimum. 

6) Optimize your page
As a final effort, you can optimize the HTML itself.  For example, table HTML tags tend to render slower than a CSS/Div layout.  If you have tables, you might consider switching to a CSS/Div layout.
