Sending Traffic To Your List Building Page. Part Two: Getting Blog Traffic

We’re back again to talk to you about more ways to get traffic to your blog, which will in turn send more traffic to your list building or squeeze page. Last time, we talked about setting up and adding content to your blog. This time, let’s discuss other ways of getting traffic.

Natural search or what they term “organic” search traffic is great, but it takes a while to build up. But there are other search engines you may not be aware of. They’re specifically geared toward searching for blogs. One of the oldest is Technorati at http://technorati.com. If you have a blog and haven’t “claimed” it at Technorati, it’s probably a good thing to do. Your site will be indexed and ranked, and you could pick up an audience, too. The more people who like your blog the higher it will rise in the rankings.

There are other less “interactive” blog searches, too, like Blogsearch.Google.com or IceRocket, but there are many more. List your blog with as many as possible.

But the interactive sites are very popular right now. I’m sure you’ve heard of MySpace and YouTube, or you’ve been hiding in a closet somewhere. These sites bring traffic, but there are hundreds of sites that will have the same effect, if you get involved in what’s called “Web 2.0.”

StumbleUpon: When you write a post, you can “StumbleUpon” it. Give each of your pages a StumbleUpon vote and watch your traffic soar. To get to that page, rather than just the first page of your blog, you’ll need to click on the post’s title (if you’re using WordPress) or click on a link that says “permalink.” That will take you to a page with the precise post number included. StumbleUpon those each time you post.

SpicyPage: This is somewhat like MySpace in that you’ll have people asking to be your “friend,” or you can find friends of your own. SpicyPage is different than Digg or StumbleUpon in that you can include not just your blog postings in your profile, but your web sites as well. Make a lot of friends, get lots of votes for your site, and your traffic will climb.

Digg: Digg was created mainly to mark news stories for its members–news stories of interest. Well, when you post to your blog, that’s news right? Unless you’ve posted nothing but a picture or silly nonsense or random musings, Digg will accept your vote for other people to see what you’ve voted on. Be sure that your post is an article, though, or your page might be “buried.” You don’t want that.

Most of these sites work the same way or similarly to the sites above. Others include Furl, Reddit, and RawSugar, but there are hundreds. Sign up for as many as you can, and each day enter your posts into as many sites as you can. The more you enter, the more your traffic you’ll get to your blog.

One more way to get traffic to your blog would be:

Wikipedia: This online, user-generated encyclopedia is an incredible source of incoming traffic, if you can meet the editors’ requirements. At the bottom of every post is a section called “Other sources,” and this is where you’d enter the link to your blog. Just be sure that you’re providing quality information in that category and that your site isn’t commercial.

If you have a non-commercial blog, as with my own at ADHDWebsites.com, where I do nothing but talk about ways to control ADD and ADHD, then you might consider adding your link to Wikipedia. Just be sure to follow the guidelines or your link will be edited out, almost before it takes hold.

All of these sources will bring tons of traffic to your site. They take some time to set up, but many of them have toolbars or buttons you can put right on your browser to make submitting easy for you. The whole thing is to be consistent. Add good information to your blog, and then be sure to favor your posts every time you make them in as many places as you can, and you’ll be amazed at the traffic you get. If you have been on-line for long, you know that one of the keys to success is in your email list. You can have a beautiful web site, a great product or affiliate connections, and lots of traffic, and still not making much money on-line. And that is what you are here to do, right?

Experts tell us that are takes as many as 7-10 connections with a new potential client before the average one will purchase. What that means is that if you are just sending traffic to your web site without adding that traffic to your email list, you are probably losing most of the business you could be generating.

Think about it this way. If your web site converts at 1% and the average buyer purchases after the 7th contact, you are probably losing 3-4 sales for every one you get. That 1% conversion rate should probably be 3, 4, or even 5%.

Here’s how it’s done…

Use a squeeze page as an entry page into your site. What that means is that in order for your traffic to get into your site, they must give you their email and name. In exchange, you will send them a free ebook or free newsletter or free report, etc.

Sure, you will lose a few who will not offer their information, but you should capture info from most of the traffic you get. This way you can email them repeatedly until they purchase, rather than the one-shot opportunity you get with your current web page.

So how do you turn this list into a super highly responsive list?

You must send them very useful and free information the first few mailings, and then send useful information regularly forever after that.

Don’t send them a blatant sales message every contact you have with them. Give them many good reasons to continue to open your mail. Remember trust is very important. If they do not open your mail, they will not purchase through your email campaign.

In our hurry to get someone to buy something, we are constantly bombarding our email list with sales offers. Sure, you have to do it to get sales, but if you want to keep your list responsive, you must send them useful information, warm them up with a presell that tells them how well the product has worked for you. Things they can apply immediately.

Get them used to clicking through links in your emails. Offer free tools, a free report, and maybe a free e-book, but they have to click through to get them. Why? It gets them comfortable with your emails and with clicking. Then when you have a free trial you want to expose them to, they will click through on that, and you will make money.

This is a no-brainer—but it doesn’t always happen—use the same sent-from address on all your email. Why? Because people open mail from YOU because they like and trust YOU. If they do not recognize your address they will not open your email.

Test everything you do.

Test three things specifically.

1) What is the open rate of your email given a specific type of headline?

2) What is the click-through rate of your email given a style of letter?

3) What is the open rate of the following email?

That last one is pretty important. If your reader reads a less-than-informative email from you, they may be less likely to open the next one and possibly even opting out of your list. You must study your list and your list dynamics to create responsive list.

It depends on the subject, but stated magic word "page". See if you can find a issue that has design options, including a 1-column model. Affiliate marketing’s one of the quickest methods to generate cash flow on the web today.

Among its many benefits is the fact that you don’t have to spend time or money researching and developing a new product. All of this has been done for you by the product owner.

This is a tremendous burden lifted off your shoulders because this is usually the most costly aspect of any business venture.

A word of caution though, you should still do a little research yourself as to whether the market wants the product you are looking to promote and whether the price point is fair and reasonable enough to attract a big audience.

Once this is done and you have found the product or service you want to promote and are satisfied with the affiliate program you should set up what is referred to as a squeeze page.

Simply put, a squeeze page is a one page pre sales letter that entices the prospect to leave their name and email address in order to receive more information on the product or service of choice.

There are several points to be made for this superb sales tactic. Number one, you set yourself apart from all the other affiliates promoting the same product. Number two, you build your own opt-in list that you can promote other products to.

So what do you need to use this tactic? A few basics and a little skill.

The first thing you need is a web hosting account and domain name. These are very inexpensive these days and are a must have for anyone who is serious about doing business online.

Second is an autoresponder. These too are fairly inexpensive. Many hosting accounts will now offer free autoresponders with their service.

Third is an HTML editor. There are several free editors out there that are easily found through a quick search. Nothing fancy is needed, just a simple user friendly application.

And the final ingredient is a little copy writing skill.

Here is a tip on what to write on your page: Go to the product sales page. Pick out the highlights, the biggest benefits you can see offered. Think about what other benefits there are that may not be stated already and jot them down.

Now go into your HTML editor and put together a small sales page using a good headline, subhead and bullet points listing all the benefits you gathered. This is where the copy writing skill comes in.

Put the email capture form generated from your autoresponder on the bottom of the page. Let your prospect know that by leaving their name and email address you will then reveal this highly coveted tool, piece of information, service or whatever it is you have and they so desperately want.

Do not mention the name of the product or service on the Capture Page, just the benefits. The reason for this is because they may have seen this product or service before and were sitting on the fence about it and you want the prospect to purchase through your link. You are going to nudge them over the fence with your presentation.

All you are trying to do is build interest, pique their curiosity and whet their appetite for more information.

Set up your autoresponder with 6-7 emails that go out in 3-4 day intervals, each building on one of the benefits mentioned on your squeeze page.

Then add in other related services or products that you are an affiliate of. Repetition is the key and your squeeze page gives you that advantage over other affiliates.

Squeeze page is one web page that uses to collect leads. I am going to run right through these steps, so get ready!

1. Create your Pre Headline – The Pre Headline explains exactly what you offer and gets the viewer excited. Tell them what the product will do for them, and keep it simple and to the point. It goes directly above the Main Headline, use black text -arial font usually looks good.
2. Main Headline – Make it grab there attention. Huge font, (Headline 1) use some Red, or all Red if you prefer. Use words like ’secret’, ’shocking’, ‘controversial’. You simply want to create interest they are obviously interested, so give ‘em what they want.
3. Professional EBook Cover-  Place it next to the Headline. Use good graphics and a decent sized image. The pictuire of the ecover will increase conversions greatly. Most of them will probably work OK, but you have to decide which one is right for you. You can find headsets on eBay, at Amazon.com, or in any store that carries electronic items.

Then, you’ll need some recording software. You can find shareware and freeware out there, for you to try and buy. Try a few of the different programs and play with the functions until you find the program that ’s right for you. Just be sure that the program has editing capability because you will need that feature at times. You don’t need to make a pristine recording, but big bloopers should be edited out or you won’t seem very professional. Some slight errors may make your recording seem spontaneous, though, so don’t go overboard on editing things out.

Yet, have a plan of action before just talking randomly into the mic. Make a loose outline or a mindmap that will give you a general path to follow. You needn’t make it too detailed or regimented or you could lose your creativity. Just be sure that you have a direction, and if need be, you can edit for length later on.

Try to keep your podcasts to around half an hour at the longest and five minutes at the short end. Though you’ll find podcasts that are shorter and longer, when you’re providing information to people used to moving at the Internet’s fast pace, try to pack as much information into as little time as possible. You can always break your podcasts down into a series, if you feel that you’ve gone too long.

Once your podcast is recorded and edited, you’ll need to convert it to the .mp3 format, if it’s a .wav or other type of audio file. You can go to a software site like Tucows.com to find converter software or just plug “.mp3 file converter” into Google and see what you come up with. The reason you need to do this is so that you’re compatible with the podcasting sites, and that’s the platform Apple iPods run on, hence the name–podcast.

After you have your .mp3 file, you’re ready to upload. Sites like Google Base and Sweetwater accept podcasts, as does iTunes, but they’re just 3 of many places that do this. These are places like YouTube that accept audio files, rather than videos. However, at some of the video places, you can upload podcasts, too. The main issue is finding a site that will house the podcast files for you. When you do a lot of them, they will take up a lot of room if you house them on your own server. Either have lots of room on your own host, or find a site that not only allows you to upload a link to your podcast, but that actually houses the podcast file for you. Once you’re decided on where the files will be stored, then don’t forget to upload the podcast to your blog, too.

Podcasts can also be set up on RSS feeds like blogs. You can do it at places like FeedBurner can help to with that. You can also get a plug in for your WordPress blog called “PodPress” that will help you to make sure the ID3 tags are correct for the podcasting on your blog. ID3 tags are just like META tags for your website or your blog, and use keywords that should be researched in the same way that you’d research them for another form of traffic.
