The best portfolios- neat and organized.
It can be bound or not, art work should be in sleeves, and MOUNTED (standard border is 3×3x3×3.5).
You should choose only your best work and one size for all of the work (typically 11×14 or 18×24). Keep it consistent, it should “flow” and show work in different stages (employers will look for consistency in skill and style, they also want to see how your ideas progress).
Choose pieces that fit the company or gallery that you are presenting them in. Let your work speak for itself, keep text to a minimum. If you need to, take along notes for the pieces of work to help with the review or any questions the employer/buyer might have.
My portfolio is 11×14 mounted (most of the time on black or neutral grey board), in clear sleeves, and unbound. My work is presented in a black (inside and out) archival box. Certainly there are many studies showing that every obstacle placed in the user’s way (such as requiring them to hunt for a “specials” link on a home page) causes overall conversion rates to drop. Unfortunately, I don’t have time to dig through my conference materials or do a web search — but I’m sure you can find a few such studies fairly easily by doing some Google searches.

Your question seems to be asking for an average or typical rate, but that’s pointless — your site is whatever your site is. If the navigation is difficult, non-intuitive, or requires multiple steps, then the conversion-rate difference will be high. If the navigation is simple (for example, if there’s a huge banner or featured link on the home page) then the difference may be quite small.

Avoid Flash websites at, almost, all cost because it lowers usability. Flash encourages design abuse as it slows websites. There is nothing worse than visiting a website and having to wait for a clever Flash animation to load. Your customers are visiting your site because they are looking for a product or service. They, for the most part, could not care less about viewing a flash movie. Sorry, the “skip intro” button is not much help either. Flash intros are slow, obnoxious, and will result in loss of revenue. Don’t add flash for the cool factor. Unless it serves a purpose, forget it.

Many Flash designers reduce the granularity of user control and regress to old school presentation styles that resemble television age media rather than cyber age media. Think of a GREAT Name for Your Blog

If you are starting with Word Press, you will want to register an account, but for each blog you want to have a creative name that you choose for you blog. For example if you were writing a blog about being a teacher you might want to see if you can get a name for your blog that has teacher “style” keywords for the title. Another example might be My Life In Room 5 for your main title. You can change the title of your blog at any time that you want so if next year you were moved to room 22, you can just edit your title, but to choose your URL it would be different.

Picking the URL

The URL is simply defined as the Universal Resource Locator. An Internet World Wide Web Address. When you choose a URL for your free Word Press Blog it is shown as: name.wordpress.com. You would substitute your name for your blog where “name” is. Your “name” can be one word or a combination of words with no spaces between them. Several of the good names are already taken but with imagination and patience you can find a suitable name. Maybe choose your own name, for example. mastermindpros.wordpress.com I was able to get this blog just now. Remember that the URL title you pick is permanent unless you choose to delete it. You can delete free blogs at any time.

Make a Commitment to Post Often

Most people start blogging because they have something to say! Some people start them for other reasons but having been a Blogger for several years now and a visitor to several blogs, I still feel the majority of blogs out there are started by people who enjoy writing and have something to say, even if it is just commenting on news articles or sharing their poetry. Some people enjoy ranting. Have you visited other people’s blogs before? Go to any search engine and type in the name of something you are interested in like: Johnny Depp Blogs and see what shows up. I got over 276,000 results for that search on Google. So you can find people with the same interests as yours. You can read what they have to say then go comment on their blog and write about it on your blog. You can ask people with similar interests to share on your blog, too.

Do Not Delete Your Blog

Maybe you have started your blog and you hate it. Well think once, twice, three times and more about whether or not you want to keep or delete your blog. Why do I suggest keeping your blog? The main reason I suggest this is because you are starting your presence on the internet. That might not mean much to you if you are new, but it might mean more in months or years to come. Your blog is real estate in the World Wide Web Land. Real Estate here can become valuable, too. You can become valuable as you grow your property (your blog). Blogging is a fun hobby, but you never know what the future is going to hold for you or where you hobby might lead you. Especially if you are building your blog over time, and you are following some of the steps I mentioned in #4 above. People on the internet and bloggers are usually a friendly group. We love to have comments on our blogs. We usually respond to them. It is a special present to us when someone takes the time to make a comment. We love suggestions and people sharing what they are doing, too. The only thing that most bloggers hate is SPAM! That is where people post only to sell something or lead people to websites that they might not want to go to. Don’t fear that though since Word Press has powerful filters now and you get to approve what people can say on their comments.

You will find that Blogging is a lot of fun! If you can send emails you can blog. It is very easy to start up a blog using Word Press or Blogger. If you have been thinking about starting a blog and have not done so yet, my advice is to get started. It is a great free hobby and you never know where it might lead you. Share your interests with the world. There are thousands of readers out there searching for information. Perhaps they will find you. Inside Google Adwords – Page Load Time

Adwords began calculating Quality Scores for ads for each consumer search in September 2008.  Part of the new calculation is page load time.  You’ll learn What is page load time, how does it affect your Quality Score and what can you do to improve it.

What does page load time mean?

Page load time is the time it takes for your page to render after it is requested.  The life cycle of a page is straight forward.

1) The request for the page is made

2) The server will performing any server side processing, like dynamically generating content or accessing a database.  When the page is completely constructed, it will proceed to the next step.  NOTE:  Static HTML pages do not have server side rendering, only PHP, JSP or ASP.NET pages have server side processing.

3) The server begins transmitting the response over the internet

4) The client computer receives the response

5) The client begins rendering the response in a browser window.  Additional requests are made for flash scripts, graphics and javascript.

6) When the page is completely rendered, and all other requests are complete, the page has loaded.

Adwords must really be measuring the time from the request until the response is read.  I doubt Google can actually be attempting to time to render the page n the client, and make the child request for graphics and so forth.  Google would have to add some javascript code to the page in order to know when the client side rendering was complete.  I seriously doubt they would do this.

How does it affect your Quality Score?

Google has this to say about why it considers page load time.

“Two reasons: First, users have the best experience when they don’t have to wait a long time for Landing Pages to load. Interstitial pages, multiple redirects, excessively slow servers, and other things that can increase load times only keep users from getting what they want: information about your business. Second, users are more likely to abandon landing pages that load slowly, which can hurt your conversion rate.”

Based on this paragraph it seems Google is trying to crack down Advertisers using server side redirects and interstitial/ad pages.  A server side redirect would be when the destination url is requested, the server side scripting language redirects the request to another url. This really performs two request, and thus increases the page load time.  An interstitial page is an advertisement page that is shown (briefly) before the content, and may be achieved with a redirect.

It also seems that Google is saying if your page takes to much to respond, it’s likely doing something sneaky.

What can you do to improve your page load time?

1) Optimize your server side scripting
If you do use PHP, JSP or ASP.NET, make sure your server side code is optimized.  This is especially true when using a database.  You need to optimize both your database, and your code for speed.

2) Get dedicated web hosting
Most cheap web hosting happens on a shared server.  That means that many websites from many website authors are all on the same server.  All of these websites compete for server resources, like bandwidth and memory.  Heavy traffic to some other website on a shared server can slow your page load time.  A dedicated server is one where only your website(s) resides at.  It’s more expensive, but you get dedicated resources.

3) Compress the size of your page
A web page is really just a file.  That file must be transmitted from your server to the client computer over the internet.  If you can decrease the size of the file, the file will transmit faster.  You can compress your pages by removing whitespace.  You can remove any unncessary HTML tags.  You can use relative urls instead of absolute urls.  Do anything to decrease the size for the file.

4) Lose the Flash Animation
Flash animation is generally rendered on the client side, so it may not factor into the Page Load time.  But then again it may.  Either way, Flash animation tends to be slow, so get rid of it for the sake of your customers.  Sure it looks great, but you can’t afford to lose sales because nobody waits around for the Flash animation load.

5) Strip out unnecessary elements from the page
Again, elements rendering on the client may not affect the page load time.  Then again they just might.  Remove any unnecessary graphics or images.  These take a long time to load.  Minimize javascript or CSS includes.  Additional requests need to made for these files, so keep it to a minimum. 

6) Optimize your page
As a final effort, you can optimize the HTML itself.  For example, table HTML tags tend to render slower than a CSS/Div layout.  If you have tables, you might consider switching to a CSS/Div layout.
